WILSON, N.C. --
Nick Lafferty (Croydon, Pa./Archbishop Wood) cranked his sixth career home run and first of the season Monday afternoon, but it was the only run Kutztown University would manage in a doubleheader against Cal U at Fleming Stadium. The Vulcans won game one, 8-0, and completed the sweep with a 4-1 victory in game two.
GAME 1
CAL U 8, KUTZTOWN 0
Cal U pitchers Damian Clarke and Tyler Bedillion silenced Kutztown's bats with seven masterful innings in the Vulcans' game one shutout.
Clarke went six and struck out four while allowing just two hits --both to Golden Bears' sophomore third baseman
Zach Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.). Bedillion struck out one in a perfect seventh with his team comfortably ahead.
Cal (9-1) went up 1-0 in the bottom of the first on Louden Conte's sacrifice fly and went on to score two in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth and two in the sixth.
Conte was 3-for-3 with a double, Nico Marchetti also had three hits, including a triple, and lead-off hitter Ben Maudie was 3-for-4 with three runs scored.
Kutztown was held hitless until the top of the fourth when Moretski started the inning with a single down the left field line. He drove a double to the gap in left center in the top of the sixth for the Golden Bears' (1-8) only other hit.
Brandon Heere (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) and
Connor Teschko (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) each drew a walk off Clarke.
Junior southpaw
Brandon Staub (Philadelphia, Pa./Cinnaminson (N.J.)) made his first career start in Maroon and Gold, striking out four in 4.1 innings. He surrendered five runs on six hits.
GAME 2
CAL U 4, KUTZTOWN 1
Ben Maudie homered twice and Dylan Brosky threw a complete game four-hitter as the Vulcans (10-1) completed the sweep.
Maudie doubled Cal U's advantage with a homer to left in the third that made it 2-0. The senior then hit the first of back-to-back jacks for the Vulcans in the fifth. Nico Marchetti followed with his second of the season.
Lafferty broke up the shutout when he deposited Brosky's 2-0 offering over the left field fence.
Andy Blum (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) build on Lafferty's homer with a single, but Brosky rolled a 4-3 double play to end the sixth and Kutztown went down in order in the seventh.
Cal's winning pitcher only used 89 pitches and struck out three.
Zach Peters (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) started for the Bears and struck out five over six frames. He gave up all four runs on eight hits.
Zach Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) struck out a pair in a clean seventh.
