PREVIEW: Johnson's Journey Fulfilled at Kutztown; Joins Hicks and Lee for Men's Basketball Senior Day Saturday

Live Stats | Live Video

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Senior David Johnson (Dunellen, N.J./Dunellen) of the Kutztown University men's basketball team knew right away that he made the right decision. Coming to Kutztown and playing basketball for head coach Bernie Driscoll and being a member of the Golden Bears program has been like a dream come true for the Dunellen, N.J. native.

On Saturday, March 2, Johnson will join teammates and good friends, Ricky Hicks (Coatesville, Pa./Polytech) and Anthony Lee (Willow Grove, Pa./Abington), along with team manager/scorekeeper Seglinda Harrison in a pregame celebration of their collegiate careers with KU.

Johnson has come a long way since his freshman season, and has become successful both as a student-athlete on his team and a leader off the court.

Before the start of the 2018-19 season, Johnson was selected as a team captain with Lee and Moe Williams (Townsend, Del./Life Center Academy). The honor was a testament to the type of individual he has become, and it was something he did not take lightly.

"It's been a great opportunity for me and I'm very grateful to be named a captain," said Johnson. "We've had a lot of young guys come into the program this year, and this was a good opportunity for me to be a leader and show them the way. Everyone that comes through this program wants to leave their own legacy, and I want to leave here with a good one. It's always been a goal of mine since high school to be a leader for my teams.

"I just try to be vocal at practice and during games. I try to show by example the way we do things around our program and set them up well for the future."

Johnson played a total of 14 games through his first two years, but since has appeared in 37, including one start, over his last two seasons. Hard work and learning from successful men's players before him have helped Johnson get to where he is today.

"Over the summers I've trained and conditioned really hard to better myself as a player," said Johnson. "Just getting in the gym and working out with these guys."

This season, Johnson has career-highs in rebounds (17) and assists (12) and has scored 63 points throughout his four-year career. Johnson has connected on nine three-pointers, including a career-high five last season. He is a SAAC representative for the basketball team.

Hicks and Lee, who may get more of the headlines for their statistical numbers, will join Johnson in KU's final game at Keystone Arena.

"Playing with Ricky and Anthony has just been incredible," said Johnson. "Ricky is my best friend. We hang out a lot on and off the court. Anthony, he is just an incredible talent. He's the best player I've ever played with, and one of the greatest players to ever play here. Those two have had great careers."

Hicks is a four-year member of the Golden Bears. He has started in 25-of-27 games this season, and has played in 97 games at point guard during his career at KU. Hicks has played behind some of the most successful guards in program history during his first three years on campus, but has taken the keys to the offense this season and is second on KU with 3.7 assists per game, and ranks ninth in the PSAC with a 1.7 assist-to-turnover ratio. He has had career-highs in ppg (9.2), rpg (3.0) and apg (3.7) and has made a career-high 21 three-pointers so far this season.

In the classroom, Hicks is a three-time PSAC Scholar-Athlete, two-time Dean's List member and was named to the Lehigh Valley Small College Basketball Media Organization's Scholar-Athlete Team each of the last two years. He is also an SAAC representative.

Lee is a five-year member of the Golden Bears and a two-year captain. He has played in 115 career games, starting in 109 as KU's shooting guard throughout his five years, and is one of just three Golden Bears to reach 2,000 points in a career (He is second all-time at KU and fifth in PSAC history with 2,221 points).

Lee holds school-records for points in a game (50), three-pointers made in a game (8), season (85+) and career (268+), and three-point percentage in a season (.516) and career (.472+). He is a three-time All-PSAC East member, a 2018 All-Atlantic Region Second Teamer, a seven-time PSAC East Athlete of the Week and was named the 2019 Lehigh Valley Small College Basketball Media Organization Pete Nevins Player of the Year. In program lore for a career, Lee ranks second in field goals made (751), fourth in steals (198), eighth in rebounds (625) and blocks (99), third in free-throws made (451) and ninth in assists (302). He has scored in double-figures in 56 straight games.
