Men's Basketball Can't Overcome Hollinger Horrors in Falling at West Chester

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Kutztown University men's basketball team is not the only Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) team to struggle lately at West Chester University's Hollinger Field House as the Golden Rams sport an 11-0 record there this season, the only PSAC team to sport an undefeated home record this year.

That trend continued, unfortunately for KU, as the Golden Bears (13-11 overall, 7-9 PSAC) fell behind by double-digits heading to halftime, and then couldn't overcome that deficit as it fell at West Chester 85-67 Saturday afternoon in a PSAC East Division matchup. West Chester has also now won 13 games in a row.

PSAC leading scorer and the NCAA Division II's third leading scorer Anthony Lee (Willow Grove, Pa./Abington) battled foul trouble and was mainly held in check by the Golden Rams' defense as the redshirt-senior was held to a season-low of 13 points and attempted just seven shots. He was 3-of-6 from long range. It was the lowest points total for Lee since he scored 11 against Shippensburg around this time last year, Feb. 12, 2018. His streak of consecutive games in double-figures grows to 53 straight.

Junior Josh Townsend (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) led the way for the Maroon and Gold with 17 points, including a career-high 7-of-7 from the free-throw line. He finished with a game-high 15 rebounds, which gives him his fourth double-double in the last seven games.

With the Golden Rams leading 18-10 at the 14:28 mark of the first half, Lee was called for his third personal foul. Head coach Bernie Driscoll was forced to sit the redshirt-senior for the remainder of the half. In that time, West Chester was able to build an 18-point cushion.

But the Golden Bears fought back and cut their deficit all the way down to eight points following a 10-0 run midway through the first half. A three-pointer by Moe Williams (Townsend, Del./Life Center Academy) at the 3:05 mark brought Kutztown to within four (39-35), but that would be as close as it would get as the Golden Rams ended the first on a 9-2 run to take a 48-37 lead into the locker rooms.

Even in the second half when Lee was inserted back into the lineup, KU struggled to piece together a large run. West Chester held a couple leads of 20-points or more and Kutztown did not get any closer than 12 points in the second half. It did not help that the Golden Bears connected on a season-low 36-percent (21-of-59) of their shots on Saturday night and KU's 67 points marked the fewest in its last 13 games.

Ricky Hicks (Coatesville, Pa./Polytech) just missed double-digits as the senior ended his day with nine points, three rebounds, four assists and tied a career-high with three steals. Kyree Generett (York, Pa./William Penn) finished with eight points and two rebounds and Facundo Arens (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Bahia Blanca) and Williams each tallied six points. Williams also had four rebounds and played 31 minutes before suffering an injury that forced him to miss the rest of the game.

Da'Quan Granberry (Linwood, Pa./Chichester) recorded four points and Austin Laughlin (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley) posted three.

Kutztown has a week off before its next game on Saturday, Feb. 16, at home against Mansfield.
