KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team has won five games in a row, its longest win streak since winning seven straight to begin the 2008-09 season. One more win for KU this Saturday, Feb. 9, at West Chester University would clinch a postseason berth for the third consecutive year.
Â
Tip-off of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division game between the first-place Golden Bears (13-9 overall, 11-4 PSAC) and the Golden Rams (11-12, 7-8) is set for 1 p.m. at Hollinger Field House.
Â
The latest of the five straight wins for Kutztown, a 70-65 victory over Bloomsburg last Wednesday, pushed KU into a tie with the Huskies at the top of the division, with each team sporting an 11-4 record in the conference.
Â
Kalee Fuegel (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy), who is tied for the league-lead with 52 steals, had a night to remember against Bloomsburg. She tallied a career-high 16 points to go along with five rebounds and three assists in a season-high 36 minutes of action to pace the Maroon and Gold.
Rylee Derr (Lititz, Pa./Warwick), who tied the program-record for consecutive games with a three-pointer with 44, finished with a double-double (13 points, 11 rebounds), her fifth this season.
Karen Lapkiewicz (Southampton, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) added 14 points, four rebounds and three assists,
Brianna Tarabocchia (Woodcliff Lake, N.J./Northern Valley Regional (Saint Peter's)) had nine points, and
Taylor Thames (Colmar, Pa./North Penn),
Gabbi Wright (Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham) and
Zoe Zerman (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) all totaled six.
Â
Kutztown took down West Chester in the last meeting, 76-66, back on Dec. 29. Since that game the Golden Rams have won seven-of-10 games to climb into a tie for third place in the division.
Â
Offensively, KU ranks second in the PSAC with 166 made three-pointers, and it is fourth in scoring defense, allowing just 63.7 points per game (ppg). West Chester in seventh in scoring at 69.4 ppg, but is 15th defensively, giving up 71.2 ppg.
Â
Kutztown can amass some revenge with a win Saturday, having lost to West Chester three times last season, including in the PSAC Quarterfinals.
