Fuegel Ignites Golden Bears' Comeback Victory over Bloomsburg

KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Kalee Fuegel (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) is usually making headlines for her defensive play, but Wednesday night she provided the Kutztown University women's basketball team with a much needed boost offensively.

The redshirt senior from Philadelphia scored 14 of her career-high 16 points in the second half, including seven in the third quarter when the Golden Bears revived their hopes, as Kutztown rallied for a 70-65 victory over Bloomsburg at Keystone Arena to claim a share of first place in the PSAC East.

Leaky ball security and 36% shooting in the first half put the Maroon and Gold in a double-digit hole at the break, but they turned the tables on the Huskies (15-7, 11-4 PSAC) in the third, outscoring them 23-11 to get back in the game.

Bloomsburg's Taylor Montana scored the opening points of the third quarter, but Kutztown quickly began its climb back and took its first lead of the night, 38-37, on a Brianna Tarabocchia (Woodcliff Lake, N.J./Northern Valley Regional (Saint Peter's)) 3-point play with 5:12 left.

Tarabocchia finished off a pass from Rylee Derr (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) less than a minute later to cap a 13-1 run for the Golden Bears (13-9, 11-4).

Though KU carried a 45-43 lead to the fourth, it took some pinpoint shooting from beyond the arc to protect. Derr, Gabbi Wright (Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham) and Fuegel each had a 3-pointer during a stretch of four straight possessions with baskets for the Golden Bears, who increased their lead to 60-53 with under three minutes to play.

Karen Lapkiewicz (Southampton, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) and Zoe Zerman (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) both made 2-of-2 at the foul line and Kutztown was 6-of-8 in the final half minute to preserve its lead and avenge an 81-74 loss at Bloomsburg on Jan. 5.

Fuegel was outstanding for the Golden Bears, making a career-high seven field goals on just eight attempts. She also had five rebounds and three assists.

Derr tied a program record by making a 3-pointer for a 44th consecutive game. All four of the Lititz native's baskets came from deep, as Derr posted her fifth double-double of the season with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Lapkiewicz added 14 points, four rebounds and three assists, Tarabocchia had nine points, and Taylor Thames (Colmar, Pa./North Penn), Wright and Zerman all totaled six.

Kutztown only committed six turnovers in the second half after 14 in the first. The Golden Bears also made 17 of their 28 shots over the final 20 minutes, good for 60.7%.

The Huskies saw their shooting drop off from 50% (13-of-26) in the first half to 39.2% (11-of-28) in the second. Emma Saxton led the visitors with 13 points. Megan Brandt followed with 12 off the bench, while Montana and Bella Ricci were also in double figures with 11 and 10.

KU moved closer to clinching its third straight postseason berth with the win and positioned itself for a run at the PSAC Eastern Division's top spot with five conference games remaining in the regular season.

The Golden Bears can definitively secure their spot in the division's top six with a win Saturday at West Chester or a loss by Millersville or East Stroudsburg.
