PREVIEW: First-Place Showdown in Women's Hoops Wednesday at Keystone Arena

KU Game Notes | Live Stats | Live Video

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Four-in-a-row. The Kutztown University women's basketball team is playing its best basketball of the 2018-19 season, winning its last four games for the longest win streak this season, the second-longest streak in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). It may be the right time then to host the team with the longest current win streak in Bloomsburg University, as the top-two teams in the East Division meet tomorrow, Wednesday, Feb. 6, at 5:30 p.m. at Keystone Arena on KUSSI Fan Appreciation Night and KU's Golden Bear Honors and Dean's List Honors celebration.

The Golden Bears (12-9 overall, 10-4) currently sit in second place in the East, just one game behind the Huskies (15-6, 11-3). KU's four-straight wins is only matched by the six-consecutive by Bloom. The two teams have seen each other plenty so far this season. They met back on Jan. 5, an 81-74 win by Bloomsburg. But Kutztown also hosted its season-opening tournament on Nov. 9-10, which featured the Huskies as one of four teams that competed at Keystone.

Since Jan. 21, KU has won its last four games, all by double-digits, with victories over Millersville (78-63), East Stroudsburg (81-68), Lock Haven (66-55) and most recently Shippensburg (97-62). In last Saturday's win over the Raiders, the KU offense racked up 97 points, tied for the third-most in a single game in program history. Each of the 12 Golden Bears that played had at least one field goal. Five players finished in double figures, led by Zoe Zerman (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) with 17 points, Rylee Derr (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) with 16 and Brianna Tarabocchia (Woodcliff Lake, N.J./Northern Valley Regional (Saint Peter's)) with a career-high 16. Karen Lapkiewicz (Southampton, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) tallied 13 points and Alexis Smith (Dauphin, Pa./Central Dauphin) contributed 11 to round out the quintet.

The Maroon and Gold offense has had success from deep this season, ranking second in the PSAC with 158 made three-pointers, and fifth in scoring defense, allowing just 63.6 points per game. Derr is averaging 18.1 ppg, eighth-best in the PSAC, an increase of 4.8 ppg from 2017-18. She has made 67 three-pointers this season, tops in the PSAC. Lapkiewicz' average of 11.2 ppg is a career-high by 3.7 ppg for the junior, and ranks second on the team.

Defensively, Kalee Fuegel (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) is third in the PSAC with 52 steals, leading the PSAC East. Tarabocchia ranks in the top-15 in the PSAC in blocks with 16, with Gabbi Wright (Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham) just behind with 14.

This should be another fun and competitive game between these two, as the last time they met at Keystone was in the PSAC First Round a season ago. They may once again see each other, but the winner Wednesday night gets a leg up.
