Softball Allows Season-Low Two Runs in 9-2 Victory Over New Haven

Box Score

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Kutztown University softball team, set to play two games, had a rain-shortened day, playing just one, but took advantage of what they had. KU allowed a season-low two runs and had two big offensive innings in taking down New Haven 9-2 Saturday afternoon in the Snowbird Freeze Out Tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The Golden Bears (3-4 overall) have now won two games in-a-row after defeating Goldey-Beacom 13-5 Friday in five innings.

Freshman Bridget Bailey (Norwood, Pa./Interboro) pitched her best collegiate game to date, throwing a complete game, allowing just the two earned runs and struck out a season-high six Chargers batters, and gave up five hits inside the circle.

Just as it did yesterday, Kutztown went on the offensive attack from the get-go. It had a three-run top of the first inning to go out ahead before New Haven even had its at-bats.

Sara Keeny (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent), who leads the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) in hits, singled in the top of the first and then stole second. Katelyn Ostaszewski (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) brought her home on an RBI single the next batter. Three batters later with runners on second and third and two outs, Cheyenne Jones (Levittown, Pa./Harry S Truman (Northwest Florida State)) tripled and brought around Ostaszewski and Tamara Jennings (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy).

The Chargers would get on the scoreboard with one run in the bottom half of the inning, and the game would remain 3-1 until the top of the fourth.

In that fourth, the Maroon and Gold took control of the game. Kutztown scored six runs, all with two outs to take full control of the game and allow its freshman pitcher, Bailey, some breathing room.

Keeny had a two-out walk and then flew home on a double by Ostaszewski. After walks to Jennings and Jenna Lipowski (Nanticoke, Pa./Greater Nanticoke Area), Hannah Auvil (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point) singled to left field, bringing home Ostaszewski and Jennings for a 6-1 lead. Another three runs would be tacked on in the next at-bat as Jones smashed a three-run homerun to cap the six-run inning.

Bailey took care of the rest from there, giving up just one run and four hits in her second win of the season.

Kutztown had its game vs. Le Moyne postponed to tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 17. It will take on Southern New Hampshire at 10 a.m., followed by the game with Le Moyne at noon.
