KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Numerous players have stepped up to provide a lift to the Kutztown University women's basketball team throughout this season. It was
Kaylan Jackson's (Germantown, Md./Clarksburg) turn on Saturday afternoon. The junior guard recorded career-highs of 23 points and six 3-pointers made as the Golden Bears cruised past Mansfield, 90-58, at Keystone Arena.
Two days removed from hitting a program single-game record 16 threes in a 93-76 victory over Salem, the Maroon and Gold were back to their hot shooting ways early.
Karen Lapkiewicz (Southampton, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) made two in the first quarter, while
Brianna Tarabocchia (Woodcliff Lake, N.J./Northern Valley Regional (Saint Peter's)) and Jackson each had one.
Jackson saw an extended run of minutes in the second and rewarded coach
Janet Malouf's decision by popping in three more from downtown to finish the half 4-of-4 for 12 points. Lapkiewicz led all KU players with 14 in the half and
Rylee Derr (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) added 11. Kutztown (15-10, 12-5 PSAC) went to the half ahead by 25, 53-28.
The Golden Bears' lead was never in danger the rest of the way. Mansfield drew within 18 points in the third quarter when it outscored KU 21-17, but the hosts eventually extended their lead to 30 in the waning moments of the fourth.
Jackson's game-high 23 points came on 8-of-10 shooting (6-of-8 3FG), easily eclipsing her former career-high of 13 set during the season-opener against Lincoln (Pa.). Lapkiewicz had 18 points and a team-high five rebounds, Derr finished with 11 points and Tarabocchia 10.
Kutztown inched closer to a first round bye and home PSAC quarterfinal game by shooting 51.6% overall (32-of-62). For the third time this season, the Bears hit 14 or more treys in a game. Saturday's 14 3-pointers (14-of-31) are tied for the third most in a game in team history. KU also exceeded the 90-point barrier for the third time in its last five games.
Though Mansfield shot 52.4% from the floor (22-of-42) and outrebounded Kutztown by seven (31-24), but were hampered by 30 turnovers. Erin Gibbons led the Mounties (2-20, 1-17) with 18 points and Mia Leonard had 16. Noelle Cameron totaled 10 rebounds off the bench.
Kutztown can lock into a top two spot in the PSAC East and secure a home quarterfinal game with a victory at Millersville this coming Wednesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
