HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. -- Redshirt junior
Tommy Killoran (Perkiomenville, Pa./Boyertown) won the heavyweight bracket and sophomore
Collin Wickramaratna (Malton, N.J./Cherokee) continued his early-season success by capturing the 133-pound weight class for 16th-ranked Kutztown University wrestling at Sunday's Bob Quade Cyclone Open, hosted by Centenary College.
Wickramaratna tore through his weight class with an opening-match pin and three consecutive major decisions to become the first Golden Bear to 10 wins this season (10-1). Competing in his home state, the Marlton native pinned East Stroudsburg's Aaron Acosta in 4:02 of their second round bout. Wickramaratna went on to outscore his remaining opponents by a combined 44-10, beating Brandon Spellman from the New Jersey Regional Training Center, 16-5, in the final.
Killoran, who missed the entire 2018-19 season, earned three pins --tied with
James Potts (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) for the most by a KU grappler on the day-- on his way to a title at 285. Two of those pins came in less than a minute, as Killoran discarded John Fountain of Rowan College South Jersey 19 seconds into their second round match, and Navy Prep's Christian Bryant at 42 seconds of the first period in the final. Killoran also pinned Montclair State's Justin Gomez in the quarterfinals (1:14) and earned a 7-3 decision over Princeton's Jack DelGarbino in the semis.
In total, four of Kutztown's entries reached the finals of their respective brackets, while six placed.
At 165 pounds, senior
Connor Rogovich (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) produced wins by major decision, technical fall and decision to secure a spot in the final against Rowan College South Jersey's Dylan Fischer, before falling by pin. Rogovich topped Centenary's Jeremy Nurnberger, 17-8, in the second round and was an 18-2 (4:31) winner over East Stroudsburg's Sergio Cespedes in the quarterfinals, before fending off Scranton's Jeremiah Oakes, 6-1, in the semifinals.
Newcomer
Robert Spezza (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) finished runner-up at 197, behind a 2:52 pin of Kiel Pechko (Scranton), 16-7 major decision over Bryar Newberry (Stony Brook) and 10-7 decision against ESU's Clayton Green. He dropped the championship match to Anthony Burburjia of Navy Prep, by pin, at 1:31 of the first period.
Connor Yourkavitch (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) (125) and
Mitchell Camp (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) (149) each placed fourth for the Maroon and Gold. Yourkavitch won his first two matches to advance to the semifinals, while Camp sailed into the semis with three straight wins.
Potts recovered from a second round loss to pin his way into the consolation quarterfinals at 184. He held off Anthony Franden of Long Island University, 10-7, before an injury prematurely ended his consolation semifinal match against Centenary's Kenny Long.
Kutztown's day was a success, as numerous wrestlers outside of those that placed registered multiple victories. Potts totaled four wins and
Michael Cusick (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) concluded his day with three at 149.
Michael Torres (Allentown, Pa./Liberty) (133),
Paul Miller (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley) (141),
Robbie Hazard (Merion Station, Pa./Lower Merion) (141),
AJ Bencivenga (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) (157),
Matt Lewandowski (Gilberton, Pa./Mahanoy Area) (165),
Anthony Emig (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) (174) and
Brody O'Connell (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) (285) all won a pair of matches.
Sunday's open tournament was the last competition of the 2019 calendar year for the Golden Bears. They'll take part in the Franklin & Marshall David H. Lehman Open on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020.
