LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. -- St. Augustine's used a late free throw to tie the game in regulation, then hit a pair with under 30 seconds remaining in overtime to down Kutztown, 68-67, Saturday in the CIAA/PSAC Challenge at Lincoln University.
It was a tough finish to the weekend for the defending PSAC East co-champion Golden Bears, who were in a tight battle with Lincoln yesterday up until the fourth quarter and had opportunities to take down the Falcons to salvage a split.
Rylee Derr's (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) jumper with 2:07 remaining gave KU (0-2) its first lead of the fourth, 55-54, but the lead was short-lived, as Quiera Gilmore answered with a 3-pointer on St. Augustine's next possession.
The Golden Bears got a crucial defensive stop in the final minute to set up freshman
Annie Whalen's (Ivyland, Pa./Archbishop Wood) go-ahead trey with 29 seconds left, but Kaaliya Williams drew a foul on the Falcons' (2-0) next trip down the floor and made the front end of her two attempts to tie the game at 58. Derr had a look to win it in the final seconds, but it did not go down.
St. Augustine's scored the first five points of overtime and led 66-60 with 90 seconds left, before Derr hit a three and converted a Whalen steal into a layup to pull KU within one.
Casey Remolde's (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) put back of a missed three from Whalen gave the Bears a 67-66 edge with 41 seconds to go.
Williams again found her way to the line with 21 seconds to play, but this time she made both to put the Falcons back in front. Kutztown again looked for Derr, its returning leading scorer and two-time All-PSAC East selection, to take the final shot, but it wasn't to be at the buzzer.
Kutztown shot 40.4% overall (21-of-52) and placed three players in double figures, led by Derr's 16 points. Remolde had 12 points and eight rebounds and Whalen 10 points. The Golden Bears were nearly even on the boards, ceding only one more to the Falcons, 37-36, but struggled to protect the ball with 34 turnovers --its most in a game in six seasons.
The Golden Bears took advantage at the charity stripe, making 20-of-26 attempts (76.9%), but made just five of their 23 3-point attempts.
Gilmore recorded game-highs of 18 points and nine steals for the Falcons, who also got 16 points from Williams and 10 from Angela Caraballo.
Kutztown hits the road for a non-conference game at Holy Family on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
