Three score in double-figures for KU, but a fourth quarter Holy Family run takes control of the game

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team featured three players score in double-figures and had a season-high eight players record at least one point, but a fourth quarter push from Holy Family pushed the Tigers past KU 73-68 Wednesday night in a non-conference game in Philadelphia.

The Golden Bears (0-3 overall) were led in scoring for the third straight game by junior Rylee Derr (Lititz, Pa./Warwick), who finished with a season-high 17 points, and added five assists and four steals. Senior Brianna Tarabocchia (Woodcliff Lake, N.J./Northern Valley Regional) also tallied a season-high with 16 points, and Karen Lapkiewicz (Southampton, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) netted 10, the most this season for the senior.

After a slow first quarter that saw the two teams combine for just 18 points, the action picked up in the second. Kutztown found itself behind 10-8 after the opening frame, but took the lead on a three-pointer by Lapkiewicz 1:13 into the second, and never trailed the remainder of the quarter, heading into the locker room ahead 29-25, following a free-throw by Gabbi Wright (Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham).

In the third quarter, the Maroon and Gold held leads as high as six points, four different times throughout the period, and held one, 49-43, heading into the fourth.

Leading 59-54 with 5:01 remaining, Kutztown met a Holy Family run that it could not stop, as the Tigers rallied and went on a 19-9 run over the course of the last 4:59. They outscored KU 30-19 total in the deciding quarter.

The Golden Bears shot a season-high 41.5-percent (22-of-53) from the floor, but Holy Family saw more shots go in a better pace, ending the night at 52.2-percent (24-for-46) and 60-percent (9-of-15) from long range, compared to 30.8-percent (8-for-26) for KU.

Freshman Annie Whalen (Ivyland, Pa./Archbishop Wood) recorded seven points and two steals, and both Kaylan Jackson (Germantown, Md./Clarksburg) and Casey Remolde (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) both had six points for Kutztown. Jackson, who's six points was a season-best, was 2-of-3 from outside the arc. Sydney Pierson (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) contributed five points for KU.

Kutztown will play its next game in the city of Philadelphia as well when it takes on Jefferson University next Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 6 p.m.
