JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -- Tarojae Brake (Coatesville, Pa./Octorara) registered his second straight 30-point game and the Kutztown University men's basketball team led Sunday's PSAC crossover game at Pitt-Johnstown by nine at halftime.
The Mountain Cats flipped the script in the final 20 minutes, however, scoring 55 points and shooting 68% to score an 84-77 come-from-behind win over the Golden Bears at the Sports Center.
Brake did everything he could to carry KU (2-4, 1-1 PSAC) to a perfect weekend. He scored 10 points in the first half and was even better after intermission, pouring in 20 on 6-of-9 shooting, including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc and 5-of-5 at the foul line in 19 minutes. The redshirt junior guard's productivity was regrettably not matched in crunch time, as the rest of the Golden Bears only managed to make five shots on 28 tries (17.9%) in the second half.
Pitt-Johnstown (5-1, 2-0) quickly whittled a 38-29 halftime deficit to two less than 90 seconds into the second half on a John Paul Kromka layup, Fred Mulbah triple and two Drew Magestro free throws. The Golden Bears maintained a slight advantage until Caiden Landis' layup with 13:22 left put the Mountain Cats back in front, 52-51.
The teams traded free throws --and the lead-- on their next respective trips down the floor, but Kutztown went more than four minutes without a field goal following a
Dylan Elliott (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek) 3-pointer with 8:55 remaining that allowed the hosts to extend their lead to double figures for the first time all day.
The Maroon and Gold got within four points on scoring plays by Brake three times in the final 3:27, but never made it a one possession game. Pitt-Johnstown made 17-of-25 field goals, outscored Kutztown 28-12 in the paint and knocked down 19-of-26 free throws in the second half. For the game, UPJ shot an astounding 42 free throws and converted 32. The Golden Bears made 84% of their free throws, but got 17 fewer attempts (21-of-25).
Brake, who had a career-high 31 points 24 hours earlier in KU's win at Clarion, finished 10-of-17 (5-of-11 3FG) in 35 minutes before fouling out in the final minute. He added four rebounds, two steals and two assists.
Ryan 'Boz' Bernstein (Bronx, N.Y./Marianapolis Prep) matched his season-high with 14 points, and led the team with 11 at the half.
Da'Quan Granberry (Linwood, Pa./Chichester) and
Josh Townsend (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) shared the team lead on the boards with eight as the Golden Bears held a 42-37 edge in rebounds. Townsend also chipped in eight points.
Landis' 19 points led four UPJ starters in double figures. Mulbah added 15 points and a game-high eight assists, Kromka also had 15 points and Josh Wise 14. Kromka made his presence felt in numerous ways with seven rebounds, five blocks and three steals.
Kutztown will break for the Thanksgiving holiday before returning to Keystone Arena on Wednesday, Dec. 4, to face Cheyney in a non-conference game at 7 p.m.
