KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University men's basketball team had it going all night as five players reached double-digit scoring and KU tied the third-most points in a single-game in program history as it took down Cheyney 120-64 Wednesday night in a non-conference game at Keystone Arena.
Josh Townsend (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) led the way with a season-high 19 points and 10 rebounds, his second double-double of the year. Freshman
Wesley Butler (Reading, Pa./Reading) tallied 18 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals, and
Tarojae Brake (Coatesville, Pa./Octorara) recorded 16 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.
KyAire Sumpter (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg) netted a career-high of 15 points, his first time in double-digits, and also had a career-best four rebounds.
Akello Mosby (Philadelphia, Pa./Carver) totaled 10 points and seven rebounds to round out the KU players in double-figures.
The Golden Bears (3-4 overall) found a rhythm offensively from the start and kept it going until the final whistle. KU shot a season-best 54.1-percent (46-of-85) from the floor and a scorching 50-percent (14-for-28) from beyond the arc, with the 14 made three-pointers a season-high.
Butler connected on a three on Kutztown's first possession of the game just 0:26 in, and KU was out in front from there on out. Brake's jumper with 0:37 left in the first half put Kutztown ahead 60-29 at halftime and head coach
Bernie Driscoll was able to balance out minutes across the board as 11 different players saw action and all 11 found the score column.
Ryan 'Boz' Bernstein (Bronx, N.Y./Marianapolis Prep),
Austin Laughlin (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley) and
Michael Smith III (Chester, Pa./Chester) all fell one point shy of double-digits, finishing with nine each, season-bests for both Laughlin and Smith III. The duo also dished out team and season-highs of seven assists, while Bernstein added four rebounds and three dimes.
Sean Griffin (Abington, Pa./Phil-Mont Christian Academy) scored his first points in a Golden Bears uniform, finishing with eight points and five rebounds.
Dylan Elliott (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek) contributed five points and two assists, while
Da'Quan Granberry (Linwood, Pa./Chichester) tallied two points, two rebounds and one block.
Kutztown will host Gannon this Saturday, Dec. 7, in its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference home-opener at 3 p.m., at Keystone Arena, looking to go above .500 in the conference at 2-1.
