KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's soccer team broke free on its new Keystone Field turf, scoring for the first time this season and earning their first win of the year at home, taking down Mansfield 5-0 Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division action at Keystone Field.
The Golden Bears (4-4 overall, 3-4 PSAC E) featured five different goal scorers, three of which tallied goals for the first time this season and two for the first time in their careers.
Kristina Miller (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn),
Alisea Munshower (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York),
Maggie Cecere (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia),
Gabby Kane (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) and
Lauren Epler (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) all found the back of the net for KU, who controlled the game from the opening minutes. KU outshot the Mountaineers (1-8, 1-6) 26-4, 12-0 in shots on goal. It also held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks on the day.
Redshirt-freshman
Alexis Saladino (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) got her first career start in goal for the Maroon and Gold and earned her first win. She was never tested on frame.
Miller netted her first of the season in the 11th minute off of a corner kick from
Schyler Ackerman (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) to open up the scoring. Munshower followed less than 10 minutes later with a shot from the left side of goal near the end line that beat the Mansfield goalie. Cecere's one-time effort right in front of goal was met by
Courtney Browning's (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) crossing path and Kutztown was able to breathe easy heading into halftime up 3-0, its largest lead at the half this season.
Kane's goal may have been the most exciting of the day as the sophomore collected a clear attempt at the top of the 18-yard box, took a dribble to her right to elude a defender, and then fired home a shot with her right foot that beat the diving Mansfield goalie into the right upper 90 of the net. Epler then tallied her first career goal with a left-footed effort off a pass by
Emily Zwiercan (Reinholds, Pa./Cocalico).
Head coach
Erik Burstein was able to play a season-high 26 players.
Kutztown will hit the road for its next two games, beginning with a game at Lock Haven on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at 3 p.m.
