BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The 24th-ranked Kutztown University football team scored 27 of the game's first 33 points and once again left the comforts of home to go into hostile territory and come out with a victory, as KU defeated Bloomsburg 27-12 Saturday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division game at Danny Hale Field at Redman Stadium.
Â
The win is the 12th in-a-row on the road for the Golden Bears (5-0 overall, 2-0 PSAC East), the third-longest streak in NCAA Division II football.
Â
Kutztown has scored 20-plus points in every game since Oct. 28, 2017, a stretch of 18 straight games. KU improved to 17-0 under head coach
Jim Clements when allowing 14 points or less. It's also the third straight game the defense has held an opponent to 75 yards rushing or less (Gannon 56, Shepherd 71, Bloom 75).
Â
Collin DiGalbo (Secane, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) was his typical self Saturday, finishing the day 19-of-27 (70.4%) for 190 yards and three touchdowns. All three scores were thrown to different receivers, including
Abdul-Hassan Neblett (Newark, N.J./Paramus Catholic),
Diego Torres (York, Pa./West York) and
Jake Novak (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central).
Keagan Harvin (Williamstown, N.J./Saint Joseph) capped the KU scoring on the ground. DiGalbo moved past Kyle Spotts into fourth place on KU's career pass attempts list (946 after today) and broke a third-place tie for career passing touchdowns with Chad Barton when he threw his 60th career touchdown pass (Novak TD).
Â
It didn't take long, or much, for the Kutztown offense to get onto the scoreboard. Following a fourth-down-and-one stand by the KU defense on the Huskies (1-4, 0-2) opening drive of the game, Kutztown went 32 yards on two plays to score the game's first touchdown. Neblett rushed for 11 yards and then DiGalbo found Torres from 21-yards out for the score just 2:47 in.
Â
The Maroon and Gold took control of the game in the second quarter. After a Bloomsburg field goal, Harvin broke free for a 13-yard touchdown run. The Huskies were held to another field goal, and then Neblett capped a nine-play, 65-yard drive with his nine-yard touchdown reception as KU went ahead 21-6 with 3:20 left in the half, and held firm defensively to go into the locker rooms at the same score.
Â
Novak's nine-yard touchdown pass from DiGalbo 8:58 into the third quarter pushed the Golden Bears advantage to 27-6. Novak's catch ended a 10-play, 58-yard drive that took up over five minutes (5:02).
Â
Bloomsburg scored its lone touchdown on a one-yard run with just 1:02 remaining.
Luke Snyder (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury), in just his second game back from injury, led the Kutztown defense with eight total tackles, 1.5 tackles-for-loss and one sack.
Chase Stephensen (Lacey Township, N.J./Lacey Township),
Nick Palmer (Montville, N.J./Bergen Catholic) and
Shawn Turber-Ortiz (Northumberland, Pa./Shikellamy) all had five tackles with Palmer intercepting his second pass of the year.
Â
Kutztown is back home after a two-week hiatus and will host East Stroudsburg on Saturday, Oct. 12, at 12 p.m. at Andre Reed Stadium for Pink Zone Day.
