KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's soccer team has seen how difficult each game in the new Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division format. In its second straight home game against a ranked opponent from the division, Bloomsburg found the back of the net in each half and won 2-0 Wednesday night in PSAC East action under the lights at Keystone Field.
The Golden Bears (3-4 overall, 2-4 PSAC East) had also hosted nationally-ranked Millersville back on Sept. 25, in the last home game, and had their home-opener against now-ranked East Stroudsburg on Sept. 14. There are four ranked PSAC foes from the East division, including West Chester, KU's opponent on Oct. 12.
The Huskies (8-1, 6-1), the defending PSAC champions, wasted little time in going ahead, scoring on a goal off of a corner kick when Nicole Varano met the ball of Lauren Hoelke in front of the net.
Senior goalie
Jenna Bracken (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional), who made a couple of phenomenal diving saves and kept the Maroon and Gold in it, finished with a season-high five saves. She was busy Wednesday as Bloomsburg totaled 17 shots, seven of which were on goal. KU registered nine shots, and two on net. The defense in front of her of
Kristina Miller (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn),
Anna Hull (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley),
Molly McHarg (Limerick, Pa./Spring-Ford),
Sam LaBianca (Beachwood, N.J./Toms River South) and
Kaylee Kupiec (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) were strong most of the evening.
Outside of the early goal, a scrum in front of the net off of another corner kick in the second half with rain falling, was put away on a third effort by Bloomsburg's Maggie McDonald. That would be all of the scoring in this one.
Emily Zwiercan (Reinholds, Pa./Cocalico) tallied three shots, and both
Gabby Kane (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) and
Kayla Argen (Cresco, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) had one shot on goal.
Kutztown remains at home and will host Mansfield in a PSAC East game on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 2 p.m.
