KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Sophomore
Logan Kemp (Hanover, Pa./South Western) won a crucial second set tiebreaker and held off Cody Turner in a marathon match to lift Kutztown University men's tennis to its first win of the season, 4-3, over Davis & Elkins Friday afternoon at the Keystone Courts.
The Golden Bears won 2-of-3 matches to claim the doubles point, but watched as three of the first four singles decisions went to the visiting Senators (1-1).
Freshman
Kurt Abell (Sinking Spring, Pa./Conrad Weiser), who played scholastically in Berks County at Conrad Weiser, defeated Hussain Hamide 6-2, 7-5 at fifth singles to tie the match, putting the result in Kemp's hands. The Hanover native came through at sixth singles, answering Turner's 6-2 win in the first set with a 7-6 (4) win in the second to even the match. Kemp outlasted Turner, 6-4, in the third for his second career victory.
KU's (1-1) doubles teams produced a pair of 6-4 wins at Nos. 1 and 3.
Josh Carl (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) and
Renato Santos (Seixal, Portugal/Fernão Mendes Pinto) topped Obert Matthew Mulyadi and Andrew Shand, while Abell and Kemp turned back Hamide and Turner.
Davis & Elkins took a brief lead behind wins at third and first singles, before Santos earned the Bears' first singles point of the day with a 2-6, 6-0, 6-4 triumph over Alvaro Legoihna. Shand won fourth singles to put the Senators back in front, but Abell and Kemp rallied KU to the win.
Friday's match brought Kutztown's abbreviated fall schedule to a close. The Golden Bears are scheduled to resume the spring portion of their slate at home against West Chester on Saturday, March 21, but the non-conference schedule has not been finalized at this time.
