KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's soccer team had three different goal scorers and battled not only Shepherd University, but also a strong rain and wind. KU prevailed victorious on both fronts in taking down Shepherd 3-0 Wednesday afternoon under gray skies at Keystone Field in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division game.
The Golden Bears (6-5 overall, 5-5 PSAC) have now won two-in-a-row on home turf in the inaugural season of the new Keystone Field complex.
Maggie Cecere (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia) scored her team-leading seventh goal inside the 10th minute of action to put Kutztown on the board first. The Batavia, N.Y. native is tied for fourth in the PSAC in goals scored this season. The junior jumped into the air and headed a ball into the six-yard box by classmate
Anna Hull (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) from about 30 yards away to put Rams goalie Lulu Fricks stopped a season-high 11 shots as KU peppered their goal to the tune of 31-2 in total shots, 14-0 in shots on goal. Kutztown also had a 14-1 advantage in corner kicks, a season-high and tied for the most since it had 15 on Nov. 1, 2014.
Junior
Rachel Rizzo (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) recorded her second goal in as many games in the second half to double up the score. Her two goals this season is a career-high. Senior forward
Emily Zwiercan (Reinholds, Pa./Cocalico) found the back of the net just 1:53 after Rizzo's to cap the scoring on the day. It was Zwiercan's fourth goal of the year and 34th of her career, putting her in a tie for second all-time in program history.
Senior goalie
Jenna Bracken (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional) was not forced into action, but earned her fifth win of the year and program-leading 37th of her career. She also now has 25 career shutouts, three this season.
KU returns to action in about 48 hours as it travels to take on East Stroudsburg on Friday, Oct. 18, at 7 p.m.
