WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Junior forward
Rachel Rizzo (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) of the Kutztown University women's soccer team tallied her first goal of the season, the game's opening goal, but eighth-ranked West Chester University scored two-in-a-row to comeback and defeat KU 2-1 Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division action at Rockwell Field.
The Golden Bears (5-5 overall, 4-5 PSAC East) had a two-game win streak snapped by the Golden Rams (8-2, 7-2) in what continues to be a very competitive East Division this season. All five of Kutztown's losses this year have come to teams that have been nationally-ranked either at the time of the game or at some point this season.
Rizzo's tally came early in the game to put Kutztown out in front and running. Her fifth minute goal is the quickest goal scored this season for KU after she finished on a pass by senior defender
Kaylee Kupiec (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester Catholic). Rizzo had two of KU's three shots on goal, with
Maggie Cecere (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia) recording the other. Kutztown was outshot 15-4 overall by West Chester. The teams were near identical in corner kicks with West Chester holding a slight edge 7-5 overall.
The Golden Rams used highlight-reel goals from Dani Cady and Jenny Bail 10 minutes apart from each other in the 55th and 65th minutes of the second half to fight back and prevent Kutztown from winning on Rockwell Field since it last did so on Nov. 18, 2016.
Senior goalie
Jenna Bracken (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional) finished with five saves, the third straight game she has done so, tying a season-high.
Kutztown will host Shepherd in its next game, this Wednesday, Oct. 16, at 3 p.m. at Keystone Field.
