ERIE, Pa. -- No. 16 Kutztown University won its 10th consecutive dual, outlasting No. 22 Mercyhurst, 23-14, Friday night at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
Bonus points from
T.C. Warner (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley (Bloomsburg)) (technical fall), No. 1
Jeff Reimel (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) (major decision) and No. 7
Andrew Dunn Jr. (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic (Virginia Tech)) (major decision) in the late going pushed the Golden Bears (10-1, 2-1 PSAC) to their fourth win over a ranked opponent this season.
The host Lakers (7-3, 2-1) still had hope when Trever Begin registered a 5-2 decision over
James Meyer (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) at 197 to cut Kutztown's lead to 19-14.
Dunn Jr., KU's leader in victories, thwarted any ideas Mercyhurst had. The Virginia Tech transfer struck first against eighth-ranked Jacob Robb with a first period takedown, but Robb answered with one of his own midway through the second. Dunn Jr. took control shortly thereafter, getting a reversal and two-point nearfall to build a 7-4 lead heading to the third.
Another takedown and two four-point nearfalls led to a 17-6 major decision for the Kutztown redshirt sophomore.
Matt Wilde's (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown Area (Ursinus)) team-leading sixth major decision of the season got the Maroon and Gold off to a fast start. The Boyertown native produced four takedowns and six back points to top Jacob Ruggeri, 16-4, at 125.
Anthony Petril (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby (Ursinus)) (141) and
Chad Haegele (Warrington, Pa./Archbishop Wood) (157) collected decisions for KU, while Mercyhurst's Alexis Soriano (133) and Mike Clark (149) pulled out one-point victories to keep the Lakers close.
Mercyhurst took its only lead of the night, 11-10, following sixth-ranked Logan Grass' 5:30 tech. fall (19-2) over reigning PSAC Wrestler of the Week
Connor Rogovich (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) at 165.
It didn't take long for the Golden Bears to regain their edge. Warner ripped off nine points in the first 55 seconds of the 174-pound bout and never looked back in a 19-3 tech. fall (4:21) of Kevin Holman.
Reimel followed with a 9-0 major decision over Trevor Johnson at 184 to remain unbeaten on the year and put KU up 19-11.
Kutztown remains in Erie to face Gannon Saturday at noon.
