PREVIEW: First Place Golden Bears Hoops Eye Third Straight at Mansfield Wednesday

KU Game Notes | Live Stats | Live Video

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team is shooting for its third straight win when it hits the road to take on Mansfield University tomorrow. Wednesday, Jan. 16, at 5:30 p.m. in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) game at Marion Decker Gymnasium.

The Golden Bears (8-8, 6-3) have beaten Shippensburg (Jan. 12) and Edinboro (Jan. 9) in their last two games and have won five of their last six. They are looking for their second three-game win streak tomorrow night against a winless Mountaineers (0-12, 0-9) team.

Kutztown enters the contest alone in first place in the East, a spot it was picked in the PSAC preseason poll back in October. It is a half-game ahead of both Bloomsburg and East Stroudsburg, which are 5-3 in the conference.

Against the Fighting Scots, Gabbi Wright's (Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham) go-ahead basket off a smooth bounce pass from Zoe Zerman (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) with 1.4 seconds left gave KU a 72-70 victory. Three days later against the Raiders it was less dramatic. Kutztown opened the game on a 10-0 run and never looked back led by a double-double from sophomore Rylee Derr (Lititz, Pa./Warwick), with game-highs of 21 points and 11 rebounds.

KU's offense ranks fifth in the PSAC with seven made three-pointers per game and is fifth in scoring defense, allowing just 64.6 points per game (ppg).

Derr is averaging 18.2 ppg, eighth-best in the PSAC, an increase of 4.6 ppg from 2017-18. She has made 46 three-pointers this season, tops in the PSAC.

Kalee Fuegel (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) is tied for fourth in the PSAC with 40 steals. Karen Lapkiewicz' (Southampton, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) average of 10.8 ppg is a career-high by 3.3 ppg for the junior, and ranks second on the team. Taylor Thames (Colmar, Pa./North Penn) is one of three Golden Bears to start all 16 games and is fourth in scoring (6.7 ppg), third in assists (2.1) and second in steals (1.5). Junior Brianna Tarabocchia (Woodcliff Lake, N.J./Northern Valley Regional (Saint Peter's)) has started in 15-of-16 games in her first season with KU and is third on the team with 7.1 ppg and second in rebounding at 6.4 rpg.

Head coach Janet Malouf ranks fourth all-time in PSAC victories, second among active coaches. She is one of five PSAC coaches to win 350 career games.

Mansfield is in the bottom two of the league in both scoring (57.1 ppg) and points allowed (76.1).
