SPARKILL, N.Y. – The Kutztown University field hockey team controlled its road matchup with the Saint Thomas Aquinas College Spartans on Saturday afternoon, winning by a 4-1 final score.
The Golden Bears bounced back from Friday's tough loss with much improved execution on the offensive end. KU scored four goals on 21 shots in the game after managing one goal on 25 shots against FPU.
Rachel Dusman (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area),
Gabby Hess (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal),
Mackenzie Fuhrman (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) and
Kyra Wozniak (Plains, Pa./James M. Coughlin) each scored once displaying the balance of the Maroon and Gold attack.
Dusman opened the scoring at the 10:36 mark, receiving a pass inside from Fuhrman off a penalty corner and slotting it home for the freshman's first-ever collegiate goal. KU continued to apply its offensive pressure in the next 10 minutes, totaling eight shots over this span which ended with Hess's unassisted tally.
The Golden Bears continued their attacking play to the end of the first half and then came out firing to begin the second. This time, the Maroon and Gold ripped seven straight shots on STAC, capping this run with a Furhman goal from Dusman, which found a way into the back of the net through traffic.
Wozniak added her fourth goal of the season a short time later, scoring in the 53rd minute, to round out the offensive effort for KU. St. Thomas Aquinas got itself on the board, however, converting off a penalty corner to score its lone goal with less than five minutes to go.
Three different goaltenders saw action in the game as
Kerri Hanshaw (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley),
Katie Dotterweich (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) and
Grace Dow (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead) each combined for the shutout. Dotterweich led the group in minutes, playing the entire first half (35:00) and earned the win, improving her record to 2-1.
The 4-1 victory for Kutztown is its fourth straight over the Spartans. KU will continue its non-conference schedule on Wednesday, Sept. 12, hosting Adelphi University at 7 p.m.
