KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Two first-half goals by junior
Kyra Wozniak (Plains, Pa./James M. Coughlin) and another from classmate
Mackenzie Fuhrman (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) guided the Kutztown University field hockey team to a 3-0 non-conference win over Adelphi University Wednesday night at Andre Reed Stadium.
The victory was the first in two homes for the Golden Bears (3-1 overall) and in their three wins this season have outscored their opponents by at least three goals.
KU was in the driver's seat from the get-go, scoring two goals in the first 8:54 of the game, with both coming in a little over a four-minute span from each other.
Wozniak dribbled down the goal line on the left side of the cage and slotted home the opener at the 4:42 mark. Then in the ninth minute, freshman
Rachel Dusman (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area) sent a pass in off a corner that was met by the stick of
Molly Bobjak (New Castle, Del./Padua Academy). Bobjak then tapped a light pass over to Fuhrman who ripped home her shot from just inside the circle and an early 2-0 lead. Dusman now has three assists on the year, second in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).
Wozniak connected on a one-timer off a pass by
Alyssa Donato (Cedarville, N.J./Cumberland Regional) in the 20th minute, and the Golden Bears rode an aggressive offensive attack into halftime. Wozniak's six goals and 12 points this season leads the PSAC.
While the defense, and freshman goalie
Katie Dotterweich (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) were not challenged often in the first 35:00, Dotterweich was still called upon to make the first save of the season for not only herself but the team. She finished with two on the night. Junior
Kerri Hanshaw (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) started the second half and was also called into action to make a save. She also ended with two.
Kutztown outshot Adelphi 17-7, including 12-4 on goal, and it also held a 13-4 edge in corners.
Kutztown has one week off until its next game when it travels to take on Bloomsburg University in non-conference action next Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 4 p.m.
