KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Kutztown University junior
Emily Smith (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Hubert Catholic) broke the school-record for career draw controls, but the KU women's lacrosse team dropped a 14-8 matchup on a cold, and at times snowy, Tuesday night at Andre Reed Stadium.
Smith broke the school-record in her junior year, picking up six draw controls Tuesday night for 146 in her career. She breaks the previous record of 143 held by Leeann Pica from 2012. Smith also holds the school-record for draw controls in a game (11) and season (61) from last year.
Kutztown (6-9, 3-7 PSAC) erased a 3-0 deficit on the back of a
Makayla Bowman (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) hat-trick in the first half, but was unable to gain a lead over the Marauders (9-5, 4-5). Turnovers plagued the Golden Bears, who fell on the wrong side of a 24-14 margin.
Bowman finished with four goals on the night.
Sarah Gabriele (Felton, Pa./York Catholic) added two goals, while
Lauren Schmidt (Hanover, Pa./South Western) and
Destanee Watkins (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) also scored.
Smith also added six groundballs.
Goalkeeper
Haley Kline (Reading, Pa./Wilson West Lawn) played well, making 10 saves in the setback. The freshman has 145 saves this season, six shy of eighth-most in KU single-season history.
Three Marauders had hat-tricks in their victory. Sabrina Fusco and Kristen Butzner connect on five goals on the night. Fusco finished with five goals, while Butzner tallied seven assists. Gillian Zimmerman and Callie Kavanaugh also netted hat-tricks with three goals apiece, while Shannon Davis picked up the win in goal.
Kutztown wraps up its home season on Saturday, April 21, against Seton Hill University. Game time for Senior Day at Keystone Field is set for 1 p.m.
