CLERMONT, Fla. – The Kutztown University softball team swiped six bases and had three different players with two hits in leading it to a 7-2 win over Salem University in game two of a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon in Clermont, Fla. KU fell in the opening game 6-2 against Augustana University.
The Golden Bears stole six bases against the Tigers, the most in a game since they came away with seven against Felician on April 2 of last season. But there would not be any stolen bases unless runners reached base, and KU had seven hitters in its lineup reach base at least once, led by two hits apiece from freshmen
Kristin Kaleycik (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and
Alyssa Oakley (Allentown, Pa./Parkland), and junior
Sara Keeny (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent). Each one of the three had a double and tallied at least one RBI.
Salem could not get Kaleycik out. She finished 2-for-2 with a walk and three RBI. Her two-run double in the bottom of the fourth inning capped a four-run inning and opened up KU's lead to 6-0. She added an RBI single in the sixth to give the KU offense all it would need, and allowed starting pitcher
Adrianna Dilal (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) plenty of wiggle room. Dilal went the distance, throwing 7.0 innings, allowing just four hits and no earned runs, while striking out four to earn her fourth victory of the season, tying her total from last season.
Kaleycik is tied for the team-lead with 11 RBI. Keeny, who also has 11 RBI so far this season, scored on a wild pitch in Kutztown's first at-bats for the opening run of the game. The junior then opened the scoring in that four-run fourth with an RBI single that brought around
Asja Saito (Pickering, Ontario/Pickering). Keeny, who is hitting a team-high .408 on the season, finished 2-for-3 with the RBI and two runs scored. She leads the team with 13 runs scored on the season.
Oakley complimented the one-two punch at the top of the lineup. She came around to score on a wild pitch in the first, two batters after Keeny did. The freshman had three of the six stolen bases, with
Tamara Jennings (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) swiping two and Keeny adding one to her career total of 74, ranking fifth in program history.
Jennings,
Blayse Cholish (Peckville, Pa./Valley View) and
Gabby Tareila (Limerick, Pa./Spring-Ford) each had one hit for Kutztown, who improved to 7-8 overall and 2-4 at the NTC College Spring Games.
Jennings has a three-game hit streak, and has five hits overall in that span.
In the opener, Kutztown had its hands full with Augustana, a team that won 40 games last season, and won two games in the NCAA Tournament. The Vikings (12-4) were sporting a 10-game win streak entering the game, and used a 16-3 advantage in hits to win the game 6-2.
The Maroon and Gold had two of their three hits in the top of the first inning, scoring a run on an RBI groundout by freshman
Jenna Lipowski (Nanticoke, Pa./Greater Nanticoke Area) and another run off an RBI single up the middle from Kaleycik.
Augustana tacked on a run in each of the first two innings to tie the game, then took the lead for good in the third, and put an exclamation point on this one with home runs in the fourth and sixth innings, pushing its lead to 6-2.
Freshman
Hannah Auvil (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point) had the third hit for KU in the game.
Kutztown has one more two-game bill while down south, opening with Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference foe Indiana (Pa.) tomorrow, Wednesday, at 9 a.m. KU will then take on Jefferson at 11:30 a.m.
