CLERMONT, Fla. – Freshman
Kristin Kaleycik (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) drove in two runs, and starting pitchers
Ava Bottiglia (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) and
Adrianna Dilal (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) both threw complete-game shutouts in a doubleheader sweep of Indiana (Pa.) and Jefferson on Wednesday in Clermont, Fla. KU defeated the Crimson Hawks 1-0 in the first game and followed that up by taking down the Rams 2-0 in game two.
The Golden Bears (9-8 overall) have now won three straight games and four of their last five, after losing the first three NTC College Spring Games of their spring break trip.
Kaleycik, KU's cleanup hitter, recorded her team-leading 12th and 13th RBIs on the day, and it was the only runs batted in on the day for Kutztown, as it would be all KU and its pitchers would need against IUP (2-5).
After a scoreless first six innings, junior
Sara Keeny (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) led off the top of the seventh with a single, and then advanced to second on a throwing error. Freshman
Alyssa Oakley (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) connected on a sacrifice bunt the following at-bat that advanced Keeny to third. After a walk to
Tamara Jennings (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy), Kaleycik dropped down a sacrifice bunt of her own, and Keeny was able to race home for what proved to be the game-winning run. Keeny is third in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) in runs scored this season with 14.
Bottiglia (3-1) retired the last 13 batters of the game to pick up her third win on the season. She allowed just five hits and struck out three in 7.0 innings.
Cheyenne Jones (Levittown, Pa./Harry S Truman (Northwest Florida State)) had a multi-hit game going 2-for-4, and
Gabby Tareila (Limerick, Pa./Spring-Ford) finished 1-for-1.
After a quick turnaround, head coach
Judy Lawes gave the ball to Dilal looking for the sweep on the day. The sophomore did not disappoint. She followed Bottiglia's lead and threw a complete-game shutout of her own, striking out three and giving up just two hits. Dilal (5-3) is third in the PSAC with five wins on the season, and she lowered her ERA to 2.33.
With two outs in the bottom half of the first inning, Jennings was hit by a pitch, and then stole second. The next batter, Kaleycik ripped a triple to center field that brought home Jennings for the 1-0 lead. Kutztown scored its second run in the sixth when
Blayse Cholish (Peckville, Pa./Valley View) stole second base and the throw down allowed
Taylor Knappenberger (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) to cross the plate from third base.
The Rams (4-6) got a hit from their first batter, but Dilal then bunkered down and went to work. She induced a double play in the ensuing at-bat, and did not allow a runner to reach beyond second until the fifth inning when Jefferson threatened. With runners on first and third and one out, Dilal sat down the next two batters to quiet the potential rally.
Kutztown outhit Jefferson 6-2. Kaleycik and
Asja Saito (Pickering, Ontario/Pickering) both had two hits, and Jennings and Jones each tacked on one of their own for KU.
Kutztown takes the field one more day in Florida, when it opens up a doubleheader with Clarion beginning at 11 a.m. tomorrow, Thursday.
