LAKEWOOD, N.J. -- The Kutztown University women's lacrosse team fell to the Georgian Court University Lions 15-10 in a non-conference tilt on Saturday afternoon.
KU got off to a good start, opening the scoring against GCU courtesy of a goal from Cyla Cafferata assisted by
Madison Carlucci (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley).
The Lions quickly erased this deficit, however, and built a lead of their own, scoring the next three goals, two of which came from star attacker Taylor Bauerband to go ahead 3-1.
This back-and-forth affair continued as Makayla Bowman and
Sarah Gabriele (Felton, Pa./York Catholic) got on the board scoring consecutive goals to even the score at 3-all.
With the game tied for the second time in the first half, Georgian Court continued this response trend, scoring three-in-a-row once again. Carlucci and Bowman scored back-to-back unassisted goals for Kutztown, pulling it within one as the first half wound down.
Bauerbond added one more for the Lions before the half, but the Maroon and Gold battled admirably against a strong GCU team in the first 30 minutes, looking at 7-5 halftime deficit. KU then looked energized by its first half play to open the second half with
Devon Fitzpatrick (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) and
Sarah Gabriele (Felton, Pa./York Catholic) registering tallies to tie the game at 7-7.
Georgian Court put in three of the next five goals in the middle parts of the second half to pull back in front, leading by just one with the score 10-9 after a Destanee Watkins goal.
This was the crucial juncture in the game however, as GCU proved itself in crunch time, netting four goals in the remaining portion of the game while Kutztown was able to add just one more before the end of the half on a
Sarah Gabriele (Felton, Pa./York Catholic) shot, falling 15-10.
Gabriele scored a team-high four goals for the Golden Bears, getting herself to nine goals on the season. Bowman tacked on two goals while Watkins, Cafferata, Carlucci and Fitzpatrick each tallied one a-piece. Goalkeeper
Haley Kline (Reading, Pa./Wilson West Lawn) had 13 saves, but took the loss, evening her record to 2-2.
For GCU, four players scored two goals or more led by Bauerband, whom scored a total of six goals.
KU will head south for its Spring Break trip to Hilton Head, S.C. for its next competition, taking on the Post University Eagles on Monday, Mar. 12 at 3 p.m.
