KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The No. 4 seed Kutztown University men's basketball team is looking to turn the tide on its fortunes inside Koehler Fieldhouse when it travels to take on top-seeded East Stroudsburg University Wednesday night, Feb. 28 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) quarterfinals. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
The Golden Bears (21-6) are playing in the quarterfinal round of the PSAC tournament for the fourth straight season. They are 2-1 in the last three quarterfinal games, including a 114-93 victory over West Chester last season. But the Koehler Fieldhouse has been a tough venue to come out of with a victory of late for KU.
ESU (21-5) has won 10 of the last 13 games in the series, including five of the last six at Koehler Fieldhouse. Kutztown is looking to avoid a three-game sweep to East Stroudsburg this season, which would be the first time since the 2008-09 season that a team (Gannon) has swept KU three times in one season. The Maroon and Gold dropped their first game against the Warriors, 101-95, back on Jan. 20 at East Stroudsburg. In the return trip to Keystone Arena on Feb. 21, KU fell 102-91.
Kutztown enters Wednesday night on the heels of a 93-79 win in the first round against Bloomsburg Monday, Feb. 26. Four Golden Bears scored at least 14 points, led by
Anthony Lee (Willow Grove, Pa./Abington)'s 23, as KU shot 61.5 percent from the floor, its second highest total of the season. Senior
Ethan Ridgeway (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) tallied 14 points and 12 assists, his ninth double-double of the season, after missing the regular season finale last Saturday with an injury.
Moe Williams (Townsend, Del./Life Center Academy) recorded his eighth double-double this season and sixth in a row, tallying a career-high 20 points and also grabbed in 10 rebounds.
Rafiq Marshall (Philadelphia, Pa./Simon Gratz (Cheyney)) finished with 16 points. Lee (21.6), Ridgeway (17.5), Williams (10.7) and Marshall (10.1) are all averaging double-figures in points on the season.
Lee is averaging 28 points per game (ppg) in his career vs. ESU, 24.5 ppg this season. Ridgeway has 22.5 ppg this season against the Warriors, and Williams is averaging 14 points and 13 rebounds in the two games.
The two teams are very similar statistically. KU leads the PSAC, shooting 49.3 percent from the field, and is second in scoring at 88.0 points per game. East Stroudsburg is first in the PSAC and ranks fourth in Division II in scoring at 93.8 ppg, and is second in the conference in field-goal percentage at 48.9 percent.
The Warriors enter having won seven games in a row and 10 of their last 11 overall. That stretch began with the 101-95 home win over Kutztown on Jan. 20. ESU has not played since its 73-66 win over Millersville last Saturday. It has scored 100+ points 10 times, and they are 17-0 when scoring at least 90 points this season. They also lead DII in steals per game (12.4), and they are second in assists per game (20.8) and fourth in turnover margin (+7.7).
The winner would advance to the PSAC Final Four on Saturday, March 3 at the PSAC East Division's top remaining seed.
