KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The calendar may have said February, but the skies said May on Tuesday with near-70-degree temperatures on campus. The Kutztown University women's lacrosse welcomed the warm weather with its season-opener at home, taking down Holy Family University 15-3 in non-conference action from Andre Reed Stadium.

Jackie Stezzi opened her Kutztown coaching career on the right foot, seeing her team hold healthy advantages in shots (40-11), draw controls (12-8) and turnovers (17-27). KU worked as a team and assisted on 10-of-15 goals while only allowing three.

Kutztown's 40 shots marked its most since 2009.

Lauren Schmidt (Hanover, Pa./South Western) scored a team-high four goals in the opener off seven shots with three draw controls. Sarah Gabriele (Felton, Pa./York Catholic) and Makayla Bowman (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) each netted two goals with three assists apiece, as Madison Carlucci (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) also scored twice.

Defensively, KU suited up a true freshman goalie, who picked up the win in her first career game. Haley Kline (Reading, Pa./Wilson West Lawn) made five saves in the victory.

The Tigers (0-1) did all they could, playing with one fewer field player Tuesday. Three different players scored, while JoAnne Mamie picked up a game-high five draw controls.

Kutztown looks ahead to its next non-conference matchup, Jefferson University at home on Saturday, Feb. 24, beginning at 1 p.m. from Andre Reed Stadium.
