KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University lacrosse team had five players score at least three goals, and had its second double-digit victory in a matter of four days, as it took care of Jefferson University 19-6 Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Andre Reed Stadium.
Makayla Bowman (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) tallied five goals, and
Sarah Gabriele (Felton, Pa./York Catholic),
Destanee Watkins (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus),
Madison Carlucci (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) and
Allison McCormick (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) all recorded hat-tricks for the Golden Bears (2-0 overall), who begin the year 2-0 for the third consecutive season. They also amass some revenge on the Rams, as these two teams met in the middle of last season, when the then-Philadelphia University Rams defeated KU 13-7. It is a season-high in goals for all five KU players.
Kutztown used a six-goal spurt in the first 12:40 of the game to open up a comfortable lead, one which did not get closer than four all game, as Jefferson would score the next two goals after the KU 6-0 start.
But freshman goalie
Haley Kline (Reading, Pa./Wilson West Lawn) came up big when her team needed her to stop the Rams run in the first half. She made a season-high eight saves and opened her collegiate career 2-0 as the starting net-minder.
Leading 6-2 with 13:42 remaining in the first half, Kutztown scored the next three goals to take a 9-2 lead into halftime, and then opened the second half with two more unanswered goals to hold an 11-2 advantage, and could comfortably play the final 28:06 ahead by a large margin.
Emily Leeb (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) and
Devon Fitzpatrick (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) also found the back of the net for KU. It was the first goal of the season for the freshman Fitzpatrick, and second for Leeb. Gabrielle had two assists, with Bowman, Carlucci, Watkins,
Lauren Schmidt (Hanover, Pa./South Western) and
Emily Smith (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Hubert Catholic) all contributing one assist.
Kutztown outshot Jefferson 36-20.
KU has one week off until it plays its next week, next Saturday, Mar. 3 against Grand Valley State at 1 p.m. at Andre Reed Stadium.
