CHEYNEY, Pa. – The Kutztown University men's basketball team featured seven different players that scored at least five points, and had 10 players find their way into the scoring column altogether in a 93-59 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) win over Cheyney University at Cope Hall Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Bears (19-5 overall, 15-5 PSAC) were led by a game-high 22 points from senior guard
Rafiq Marshall (Philadelphia, Pa./Simon Gratz (Cheyney)), who was making a homecoming appearance, returning to Cheyney for the first time since transferring to Kutztown after playing his first three seasons on the Cope Hall floor. It seemed as if the Philadelphia native was excited for his return, as he shot 50 percent (8-of-16) from the floor, including 4-for-8 from long distance, and also grabbed four rebounds and dished out four assists.
Marshall led the charge of three other Kutztown players that scored in double-figures.
Moe Williams (Townsend, Del./Life Center Academy) had his third straight double-double, finishing with 18 points and 12 rebounds, going 8-of-8 from the field.
Anthony Lee (Willow Grove, Pa./Abington) had 17 points and six rebounds and was 5-of-9 from three-point land.
Max Wagner (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) was the fourth starter to reach double-digits, going for 11 points and adding five rebounds, while connecting on his lone 3-pointer of the day.
Ethan Ridgeway (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin), the fifth starter, recorded five points, nine assists and four rebounds. His streak of 22 consecutive games scoring double-digit points came to an end, but Ridgeway did not have to be a scoring threat against the Wolves (2-22, 2-18) as much as he normally has to, but he was able to facilitate the offense and see nine other teammates record points.
It is the fourth straight win for the Golden Bears. In other action around the PSAC, with East Stroudsburg taking down West Chester 111-101, KU currently sits in fourth place in the PSAC East Division, one-half game behind the Golden Rams (16-5), who hold a tie-breaker for KU because of their sweep during the regular season. The Warriors (16-4) are in a first-place tie with Shippensburg (16-4) with the Raiders positioned ahead due to their record against familiar opponents.
For a majority of the first half, Cheyney kept with the pace of KU, as the two teams went back-and-forth scoring, until Kutztown made a late run to extend its lead to double-figures at 38-24 at halftime.
The Maroon and Gold held onto that double-digit lead in the second half, but the Wolves remained within striking distance, trailing 53-42 at the second media timeout with 11:40 left in the game. Kutztown used the next 4:07 to go on an 18-2 run to give itself a 71-44 cushion with 7:33 to go, and was able to hold off any Cheyney push.
Facundo Arens (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Bahia Blanca) tallied six points and a season-high four rebounds on 3-of-4 shooting.
David Johnson (Dunellen, N.J./Dunellen) had five points, including draining one of his three 3-point attempts. Senior
Demetrius Bennett (Conshohocken, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh (Neumann)) added four points and an assist. Freshman
Kiyon Hardy (Philadelphia, Pa./The Shipley School) had three points, two assists and two steals, and
Josh Townsend (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) contributed two points and one rebound.
Kutztown outrebounded Cheyney 47-35, and forced 20 turnovers.
Kutztown hosts East Stroudsburg Wednesday, Feb. 21, at 7:30 p.m. at Keystone Arena in a pivotal matchup for playoff seeding. That same evening, West Chester hosts Shippensburg.
