KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University men's basketball team defeated Mansfield University 77-71 in its last game last Saturday, Feb. 10 after a week off since last playing. Now it will play just two nights later when KU hosts Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division top seed No. 19 Shippensburg University Monday, Feb. 12 at 7:30 p.m. at Keystone Arena in a 'White Out' event.
The Golden Bears (16-5 overall, 12-5 PSAC) welcome the Raiders (18-4, 14-3) to town after the previous matchup between the two teams at Kutztown was postponed due to inclement weather. Shippensburg won the other meeting this season back on Jan. 27 88-80 at home. KU was led by 18 points from
Rafiq Marshall (Philadelphia, Pa./Simon Gratz (Cheyney)). The four other starters all recorded double-digits in points with
Ethan Ridgeway (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) scoring 14 points, and
Anthony Lee (Willow Grove, Pa./Abington),
Moe Williams (Townsend, Del./Life Center Academy) and
Max Wagner (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) all adding 11. The bench, however, contributed just 15 points, led by six from
Oenis Medina (Reading, Pa./Reading (Shippensburg)).
What hurt the Maroon and Gold was their shots not falling. They could not get many three-pointers to fall, as they shot 6-for-22 (27.3%) from long range compared to the Raiders (15-3, 11-2) hot shooting of 11-for-21 (52.4%) on the day. Kutztown shot 31-of-75 (41.3%) from the floor, the lowest this season. It was not a sign of the norm as KU has a 49.2 percentage from the floor, which ranks first in the PSAC. Shippensburg is fourth in the conference at 48.3 percent, and is first in three-point percentage (39.6).
Lee has been the consistent scoring threat for KU, just as Dustin Sleva has been for the Raiders. The two rank third and fourth in the PSAC in scoring at 22.4 ppg and 22.1 ppg respectively. Lee is first in NCAA Division II in 3-point percentage (51.2) and is fourth in the PSAC in field-goal percentage (55.6) and free-throw percentage (89.4). Sleva is sixth in the PSAC in field-goal percentage (53.9), fourth in 3-point percentage (43.8) and second in rebounding per game (10.9).
Ridgeway is the other Golden Bear player averaging in double-figures in scoring at 17.9. He is second in Div. II in assists per game at 7.9 and needs just one assist to reach the top-five all-time in PSAC history. Ridgeway enters tonight's game with 631 career dimes.
Williams is coming off a season-high against Mansfield, grabbing 18 rebounds, ranking fourth in the PSAC in game-highs for rebounds this season, the most by a freshman.
Kutztown will have its hands full on both ends of the floor, as Shippensburg is giving up just 69.5 ppg, third in the PSAC.
