No. 16 Wrestling Holds on for Top-25 Victory over No. 19 LIU Post

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The 16th-ranked Kutztown University wrestling team used its two 'big guns' in holding off 19th-ranked LIU Post Saturday afternoon in a 25-15 non-conference road match.

The Golden Bears (2-1 overall) have now won two straight dual matches after taking down Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) foe and 21st-ranked Seton Hill back on Dec. 1.

KU opened Saturday with two consecutive bout wins, a 15-2 major decision from Matt Wilde (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown Area (Ursinus)) at 125 followed by a 9-4 decision from Christopher Crane (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) at 133.

The Pioneers stormed back in a back way via a pin at 141 from their No. 1 ranked wrestler in his class. But Michael Cusick (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) returned the favor with a pin of his own at 149 to extend KU's match lead back to seven at 13-6. Chad Haegele (Warrington, Pa./Archbishop Wood) continued his strong start to the season one bout later with a decision at 157. Haegele is now 8-1 on the year.

LIU Post would make it very interesting by winning the next three bouts via decisions, and trailed by just two team points (17-15) with two bouts left.

But the Maroon and Gold had their two ranked wrestlers remaining, and the duo of No. 1 Jeff Reimel (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) and No. 9 Andrew Dunn Jr. (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic (Virginia Tech)) came through when their team needed them to.

Reimel won on a 10-0 major decision at 197 to swing the momentum back to KU. Dunn Jr. followed suit with a 20-4 tech fall victory at 285. Reimel is unbeaten at 3-0 this season and Dunn Jr., one week after receiving second place and All-PSAC honors at the PSAC Championships, is 8-1.

Kutztown will next be back out on the mats after the new year when it competes at the Franklin and Marshall Open on Saturday, Jan. 5, beginning at 9 a.m.
