MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The 23rd-ranked Kutztown University football team had been itching to get back on the field after experiencing its first setback of the season last weekend, and it looked as if KU was ready to put the past behind it. A 27-point second quarter after trailing after one catapulted Kutztown to a 62-10 win at Millersville University Saturday evening in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division game.
Behind 10-7 after the opening 15 minutes, the Golden Bears (8-1 overall, 5-1 PSAC East) rattled off 27 straight points in the second quarter and 55 unanswered in total, spanning three full quarters.
The 62 points is the most by Kutztown all season and the fifth time in eight games that the offense has scored at least 41 points. It came in to the game third in the PSAC in scoring at 37.1 points per game. It is also the most points KU has scored against Millersville in a series dating back to 1903.
After the Kutztown offense was forced to go three-and-out on its first possession of the second quarter following a Marauders field goal to go up 10-7, it was the KU special teams unit that provided the spark it needed.
Sophomore
Chris Thomas (Norwood, Pa./Interboro) blocked a Millersville punt on its ensuing drive, the ball was then picked up and taken back 25 yards for a touchdown by
Majid Abdur-Rahman (Rahway, N.J./Rahway) to give KU a 14-10 lead, one that it would not relinquish.
Redshirt-senior captain
Tajier Jefferson (East Orange, N.J./Queen of Peace) then added a pick-six as he intercepted a Marauders pass and took it 31 yards to pay-dirt to cap a second quarter in which the Maroon and Gold took control of the game and headed into halftime ahead 34-10.
The KU scoring barrage continued in the third quarter as it outscored Millersville 21-0 and was able to see-out the conference victory.
Redshirt-senior
Craig Reynolds (Willow Grove, Pa./Abington) continues to make history climbing the program's all-time leaderboards. He rushed for two touchdowns and is now tied for KU's all-time leader in rushing touchdowns with 33. He ended his night with 78 yards on 12 carries. Reynolds now has 2,520 career rushing yards and climbed into the top-five in career rushing yards.
Redshirt-sophomore quarterback
Eric Nickel (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) got the start under center for KU and finished with 182 yards and four touchdowns through the air, and also found the end zone on the ground and led KU with 17 rushing attempts for 141 yards. He found eight different receivers, four of which caught touchdown passes.
Amadou Barry (Upper Darby, Pa./West Catholic Prep),
Troy Brown Jr. (Lincoln University, Pa./Oxford Area),
Jack Pilkerton (La Plata, Md./La Plata (Golden West)) and
Diego Torres (York, Pa./West York Area) all had touchdown receptions. Senior captain
Conor Sullivan (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) finished with four receptions for a team-high 60 yards.
Abdul-Hassan Neblett (Newark, N.J./Paramus Catholic) had 11 carries for 51 yards.
The Kutztown defense allowed the second-fewest points total this season and was led by six tackles apiece from
Mason Pease (King of Prussia, Pa./Timber Creek Regional (Morgan State)),
Shawn Turber-Ortiz (Northumberland, Pa./Shikellamy) and Scherer.
Dave Calderon (Willingboro, N.J./Neptune (New Haven)) had a KU career-high three sacks, and
Adam Krauter (Springfield, Pa./Springfield Township) added one sack.
Three Kutztown players had interceptions including Jefferson,
Ahkee Cox-Cowan (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg) and
Chris Thomas (Norwood, Pa./Interboro).
