Derr Drops 28 in KU's First Win of 2018 over GCU

Box Score

LAKEWOOD, N.J. – Rylee Derr (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) tied a school-record, netting seven three-pointers on her way to 28 total points to lead the Kutztown University women's basketball team to its first victory of the 2018 season, outpacing Georgian Court University 76-59.

Through the first two games of the 2018 campaign, fans of the KU women's basketball team hadn't quite seen a complete effort from this talented Golden Bear group. That all changed on Wednesday evening as KU found and then maintained its shooting form from distance and strong defensive presence, leading from the 2:03 mark in the first quarter onward.

Derr racked up 28 points, going 7-of-15 from beyond the arc, while adding nine rebounds and four assists. After outscoring the Lions 20-14 in the first quarter, the Warwick-native made three triples in a span of 2:30, the third of which put Kutztown up a comfortable 20 points, 36-16. Her seven three-pointers not only tie a school-record, but also tie her own career-high set on Jan. 1 of last season against Cheyney.

After establishing a 12-point halftime lead, Kutztown maintained its advantage to the end of game, extending the margin to as much as 24 in the fourth quarter. Newcomer Brianna Tarabocchia (Woodcliff Lake, N.J./Northern Valley Regional (Saint Peter's)) continues to impress on both ends of the floor as she collected 14 points, seven rebounds and three steals, shooting 54.5 percent from the floor.

Starter Karen Lapkiewicz (Southampton, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) was third in scoring, adding two assists and two rebounds in 24 minutes of action. Kalee Fuegel (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) also delivered a well-rounded performance with ten points, six rebounds, five assists and a career-high six steals.

The Golden Bears shot 47.2 percent from the field and 42.3 from distance, making 11 3-PTs and going 15-of-22 from the charity stripe. Kutztown won the rebounding battle as well, finishing with 39 rebounds compared to GCU's 31.

Getting its first victory of 2018, KU will return home for a few days of practice before heading to Texas for its Thanksgiving Trip. Kutztown will take on Saint Edward's in its next game in Austin on Tuesday, Nov. 20. The Golden Bears then move to San Antonio for two games vs. No. 10 Lubbock Christian and Saint Mary's (TX) on Nov. 23-24, respectively.
