Townsend's Late-Game Heroics Lift Men's Basketball to 76-71 Win at University of Sciences

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Junior Josh Townsend (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) of the Kutztown University men's basketball team poured in a career-high 13 points in helping KU to a 76-71 non-conference road win at the University of the Sciences Wednesday night in Philadelphia.

None of Townsend's 13 points or eight rebounds were bigger than the sequence with 0:18 remaining.

KU had the ball and was leading by just two, 73-71. A shot went up, followed by a tip-back attempt, which also hit off the iron. Townsend was there to grab the follow-up, brought it down, and then was fouled as he saw the ball go through the net for a pivotal offensive possession for the Golden Bears (2-1 overall). (VIDEO)

The Philadelphia native capped the scoring for KU on the following possession, hitting 1-of-2 from the free-throw line to seal the victory.

In a back-and-forth, up-and-down game with two quality scoring teams, large leads for any team was not often seen. After a three-pointer by sophomore Facundo Arens (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Bahia Blanca) at the 6:43 mark of the first half, the Maroon and Gold found themselves leading 31-19, the largest lead by any team.

The Devils (1-2) would score 22 of the next 32 points to go into the locker rooms tied at halftime, 41-41.

Sciences would actually take the lead in the opening 1:07 on a three-pointer, one of nine that it hit throughout the course of the game. But Kutztown tied it 0:18 later on a three of its own by Kiyon Hardy (Philadelphia, Pa./The Shipley School). And we were off and running for the next 18:57.

There would be nine lead changes and five ties before KU took the lead for good by a layup from Townsend with 2:23 left.

Redshirt-senior Anthony Lee (Willow Grove, Pa./Abington) led the way for Kutztown with 16 points, six rebounds. seven assists and two steals. He connected on three 3-pointers, but the rims were unkind for a few other ones he missed. The Golden Bears as a team hit 12 3-pointers, the most since the season-opener last season.

The sophomore Hardy tallied a career-high 13 points and played an all-around type game for KU. He finished with three rebounds, three assists, and four steals, while shooting 3-for-4 from beyond the arc and 4-of-4 at the charity stripe. Ricky Hicks (Coatesville, Pa./Polytech) was the fourth member to score in double-figures, ending with 10 points.

Moe Williams (Townsend, Del./Life Center Academy) just missed a double-double, recording eight points and nine rebounds to go along with five assists. Freshman Austin Laughlin (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley) contributed six points, including 2-for-2 from three, and Arens chipped in five points and two rebounds.

Freshmen Dylan Elliott (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek) and Akello Mosby (Philadelphia, Pa./Carver) scored three points and two points respectively, giving KU nine different players to hit the score column, the most this season.

David Johnson (Dunellen, N.J./Dunellen), Da'Quan Granberry (Linwood, Pa./Chichester) and Kyree Generett (York, Pa./William Penn) all played in the win for KU.

After three straight games away from home to open up the 2018-19 campaign, Kutztown returns to Keystone Arena this Saturday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m. in a non-conference games against Cheyney.
