MILLERSVILLE, Pa. –
Kyra Wozniak (Plains, Pa./James M. Coughlin) tallied her career-high and NCAA-leading 14th goal of the season to open up the scoring, but the sixth-ranked Kutztown University field hockey team surrendered two unanswered goals within five minutes later to fall 2-1 at No. 9 Millersville University Tuesday night in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) game.
The Golden Bears (9-2 overall, 2-1 PSAC) had won eight straight coming in and hadn't lost since a 2-1 overtime defeat to Franklin Pierce back on Sept. 7, their longest such streak since the 2008 season.
Wozniak's opener came off a rebound on an initial KU shot attempt. The assist was credited to junior classmate
Mackenzie Fuhrman (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township), who now leads the PSAC with six assists on the year. She also led the team with four shots.
Gabby Hess (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal) recorded two shots for KU.
The Kutztown defense had allowed a combined four shots in its last four games, but allowed seven total, including five in the pivotal first half where the Marauders (6-3, 2-1) came from behind to take the 2-1 lead, and later held on for the victory.
The Maroon and Gold actually outshot Millersville 10-7 and 4-2 on goal, but the Marauders took advantage of their two shots on goal, as both resulted in scores.
Freshman goalie
Katie Dotterweich (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) is second in the PSAC in both goals allowed (six) and goals against average (.629).
Kutztown has another PSAC nationally-ranked test at home on Friday, Oct. 12 when it hosts No. 5 Shippensburg (7-3, 1-2), who are coming off a 4-2 home loss to No. 1 West Chester tonight, Tuesday.
