KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The sixth-ranked Kutztown University field hockey team came back from two goals down in the second half against No. 5 Shippensburg University, but fell 3-2 in overtime at Andre Reed Stadium on Friday afternoon.
Despite facing a two-goal deficit with just 25 minutes remaining, KU never wavered, first getting on the scoreboard with a goal from
Alyssa Donato (Cedarville, N.J./Cumberland Regional) off a penalty corner at the 52:20 mark. The Maroon and Gold continued to press after Donato's tally, totaling eight shots and seven penalty corners in the final 18 minutes. With the time ticking away in the final period,
Rose Moore (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville Area) pounced on a deflection in front of goal with just 11 seconds remaining to complete the Kutztown comeback, tying the score at 2-2 to force an overtime period.
In extra time, Kutztown had a chance to score with
Rachel Dusman (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area) streaking to the cage, but the Raider defense stood strong. A short time later, Shippensburg created an opportunity in its offensive end, which eventually ended with SU sneaking the game-winner into the KU net two minutes into overtime.
KU (9-3, 2-2 PSAC) fired off 22 shots in the game and limited Shippensburg (8-3, 2-2 PSAC) to just one second-half shot after the Raiders totaled nine shots in the opening period. Kutztown was blanked in penalty corners in the opening 35 minutes, but responded with nine penalty corner opportunities in the second half.
Katie Dotterweich (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) took the loss for Kutztown, stopping five shots in 72 minutes, dropping her record to 9-3. Ally Mooney earned the victory for the Raiders, playing all 72 minutes and making eight saves to improve her record to 8-3.
Mackenzie Fuhrman (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) and
Leigh Roselli (Romansville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) combined to assist on Donato's goal as Roselli worked the ball up top from the corner to Fuhrman who found an open Donato for KU's first goal.
Kutztown will look to rebound on the road at East Stroudsburg on Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 3:30 p.m.
