KUTZTOWN, Pa. –
Kyra Wozniak (Plains, Pa./James M. Coughlin) tipped in a pass from
Rachel Dusman (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area) in the 66th minute to lead the eighth-ranked Kutztown University field hockey team over the sixth-ranked Bloomsburg University Huskies in KU's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) lid-lifter on Tuesday night inside of Andre Reed Stadium.
Kutztown (8-1, 1-0 PSAC) enjoyed possession in the Bloomsburg (5-2, 0-1 PSAC) defensive end for much of the game, but had nothing to show for it through 66 minutes. That all changed 25 seconds later when Wozniak took a bouncing back-handed pass from Dusman and deflected it high over the Husky goaltender for the game-winner.
Leigh Roselli (Romansville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) then played a key role in seeing out the game, using her stick skills to play keep-away from the Bloomsburg defense for the final 3:35.
KU pitched a shutout on the defensive end as the score indicates, but the shutout went beyond the final score. The Maroon and Gold allowed zero shots in the game from nationally-ranked BU, surrendering a lone penalty corner in 70 minutes of play.
For head coach
Marci Scheuing's Golden Bears, Kutztown finished with 10 shots, six on goal and four penalty corners.
Mackenzie Fuhrman (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) was outstanding in her defensive midfield role, breaking up several Husky attacks. The midfield collection of
Molly Bobjak (New Castle, Del./Padua Academy),
Gabby Hess (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal),
Hannah Shirk (Hamburg, Pa./Hamburg Area (Slippery Rock)) and Fuhrman applied pressure on the Bloomsburg defense throughout the night, keeping BU in its own end for most of the game.
Katie Dotterweich (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) earned the victory, playing all 70 minutes in net, improving her record to 8-1 overall. The goal for Wozniak is her 11th of the season in just nine games with the junior currently leading all of Division II in goals scored. This is now the second win of the season for Kutztown over Bloomsburg after defeating the Huskies, who were ranked fifth at the time, on the road 2-1 on Sept. 19.
Riding a seven-game win streak and undefeated in regulation this season, the Maroon and Gold will head to Seton Hill for their next matchup, taking on the Griffins at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6.
