KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's volleyball team fell in four sets to California (PA) University in its final Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) home game of the 2018 season, which featured KU's Senior Day celebration pregame.

Head coach John Gump and the Golden Bears honored the 2018 senior class of Niki Carpenter (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion Area), Jessica Howe (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area), Paige Miller (Halifax, Pa./Halifax (Harrisburg Area C.C)), Amanda Meck (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood Area) and Brittney Moyer (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain (Lock Haven)) for their dedication to the KU Volleyball program throughout their time in Maroon and Gold.

Holly Owen (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) led KU's effort in the match with 14 kills while Moyer posted 13 kills and added 14 digs. Moyer now needs just five kills to reach the 1,000 career-kill milestone as a Golden Bear. Howe notched eight kills to round out the top-three attackers for KU. Carpenter recorded four total blocks to lead the Maroon and Gold at the net.

Abbey James (York, Pa./West York Area) paced the KU offense to the tune of 22 assists with Meck posting eight in support. Defensively, Sydney Wilson (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) patrolled the backline a night after she reached the 1,000 career-dig mark, racking up a team-high 17 digs.

Kutztown again fought hard, despite the defeat, as each team split the first two sets. However, Cal used a late run in set three to gain the advantage, taking a 2-1 lead via a 25-19 win in the frame. Set four was back-and-forth between both sides, but the Vulcans pushed for three of the final four points to take the fourth set, 25-23, and the match, 3-1.

KU (10-15, 3-12 PSAC) posted 44 kills compared to Cal's (18-9, 11-4 PSAC) 38, but the Vulcans took control of the match with their net defense, thwarting KU's attack by out-blocking Kutztown 13.0-4.0. KU delivered a strong defensive effort, racking up 60 digs in four sets of play.

The Maroon and Gold will continue their PSAC slate with a mid-week matchup at East Stroudsburg University on Tuesday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m.
