Wozniak Interview
KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Juniors
Mackenzie Fuhrman (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) and
Kyra Wozniak (Plains, Pa./James M. Coughlin) scored second-half goals less than three minutes apart from each other and fueled the seventh-ranked Kutztown University field hockey team to an emotional 2-0 victory against No. 1 West Chester University Wednesday night on a chilly night under the lights at Andre Reed Stadium in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.
To say that the Golden Bears (11-4 overall, 4-3 PSAC) were due for a top-10 win would be an understatement. Over the last two-plus weeks, they fell just short, with three one-goal defeats to No. 9 Millersville, No. 5 Shippensburg and No. 2 East Stroudsburg.
But not Wednesday.
Four days after celebrating 50 years of KU field hockey, its current crop of student-athletes continued the celebration into the week, and helped the program take a giant leap towards securing a PSAC postseason berth.
"We're feeling great," said Wozniak after the win. "We were vying for no practice tomorrow, but we need to come back out strong for IUP this weekend. We knew West Chester was tough because they were undefeated in the PSAC to this point, so we really wanted to shut them down."
Kutztown currently sits in fifth-place in the PSAC with three games to play. It controls its own destiny.
It was a scoreless first half, one which KU still quietly played the better field hockey. The Maroon and Gold created a number of chances in front of the Golden Rams' (12-2, 6-1) cage, and had a 6-1 advantage in penalty corners. The formations and plays drawn up by head coach
Marci Scheuing and her staff of
Morgan Firestine and
Corrine McConville caused fits all game for West Chester.
Leigh Roselli (Romansville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) was the point guard behind the operation and was always there to start up the play.
It doesn't matter how many, it just matters that it happens. And on its ninth and final penalty corner of the contest, KU broke through with Fuhrman's opener in the 61st minute of play. Roselli and
Rachel Dusman (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area) accounted for the assists. It was the seventh assist for Dusman and fourth for Roselli.
Wozniak added the cherry on top with her league-leading 17th of the season off an assist by classmate Molly Bobjack.
Kerri Hanshaw (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) got the start in cage for Kutztown and shined bright, stopping anything and everything that came her way. She finished with a career-high and KU season-high eight saves. The defense of Roselli,
McKenna Conselyea (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) and
Hadley Wiktor (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) was stout in front of her all night.
Kutztown hits the road for its next two PSAC games, beginning with a tilt at IUP on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 5 p.m.
