Golden Bears Fall to Clarion in Three Sets

CLARION, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's volleyball team was defeated 3-0 by the Clarion University Golden Eagles in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action on Saturday afternoon.

Holly Owen (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and Brittney Moyer (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain (Lock Haven)) combined for 26 kills for KU, but a strong Clarion attack proved too much for Kutztown to keep up with. The Golden Eagles totaled six more kills than the Golden Bears (43-37) and posted nine service aces on their way to the sweep. Both teams were strong at the net as KU and CU collected 8.0 and 9.0 total blocks, respectively.

Niki Carpenter (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion Area) added four kills to round out KU's top-three attackers, but the outside hitting duo of Owen and Moyer accounted for over half of Kutztown's attacks and 70.2 percent of its total kills.

Abbey James (York, Pa./West York Area) dished out 18 assists for the Maroon and Gold with Amanda Meck (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood Area) racking up 11 of her own. Sydney Wilson (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and Moyer led the defensive effort, posting 11 digs a piece. Meck also totaled nine digs in support. As a team, KU was resilient on the defensive end against CU's high-powered attack, collecting 54 digs compared to Clarion's 48.

Wilson now needs just 12 digs to reach the 1,000 career-dig milestone, a very attainable mark in KU's next game. KU is now 10-13 and 3-10 in PSAC play with six games remaining in the regular season. Moyer, whom eclipsed 1,000 career kills last season including her freshman year at Lock Haven, is now just 27 kills away from recording her 1,000th KU kill.

Kutztown will next face Seton Hill University on Friday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. for its final home stand of the 2018 season. Saturday, Oct. 27 pits KU against California (PA) and will be the Golden Bears' Senior Day, honoring Carpenter, Howe, Moyer, Meck and Paige Miller (Halifax, Pa./Halifax (Harrisburg Area C.C))
