INDIANA, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's volleyball team won for the fourth time in its last five matches on Friday night, downing Indiana University of Pennsylvania in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action on the road.
Kutztown (10-12, 3-9 PSAC) controlled the pace of the match with IUP (7-18, 3-8 PSAC), downing the Crimson Hawks handedly in the first two sets, 25-9. The Crimson Hawks totaled just seven combined kills in sets one and two, holding a negative hitting percentage in both frames. Set three was much more competitive, but KU eventually overcame an early deficit to finish off IUP, 25-17, in the frame and take the match by a clean sweep, its first in PSAC play this season.
Holly Owen (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) set the tone for the Maroon and Gold, posting 13 kills on 23 attempts, hitting at a blistering .522 clip. As a team, Kutztown totaled 41 kills in three sets, hitting a season-high .405.
A big factor in the match was a nearly-perfect outing from the Golden Bears' middle hitters,
Lilly Charlton (Landenberg, Pa./Avon Grove) and
Niki Carpenter (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion Area). Both totaled five kills each, combining for ten kills and zero errors on 11 attempts.
Facilitating the KU offense was
Abbey James (York, Pa./West York Area) and
Amanda Meck (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood Area), whom combined for 27 assists, posting 15 and 12, respectively. Meck also posted eight digs and a service ace in three sets of play.
Brittney Moyer (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain (Lock Haven)) led the defensive effort with a team-high nine digs, adding six kills.
The Maroon and Gold have made quite the turnaround after losing eight straight matches to begin PSAC play, downing Lock Haven, West Chester and now Indiana (PA) to secure wins in three of their last four conference matches.
Kutztown will look to push its win streak to three-in-a-row tomorrow, Oct. 20, as it takes on Clarion University at 1 p.m.
