EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The seventh-ranked Kutztown University field hockey team went toe-to-toe with second-ranked East Stroudsburg University, but fell 3-2 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action on Wednesday afternoon.
KU (9-4, 2-3 PSAC) led 1-0 and 2-1 in the game, but a resilient Warrior (10-2, 5-0 PSAC) squad continued to answer, scoring twice in the final 15 minutes to pull off the comeback victory.
Kyra Wozniak (Plains, Pa./James M. Coughlin) scored her 15th goal of the season on an assist from
Mackenzie Fuhrman (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) to put Kutztown on the board first at the 13:03 mark.
ESU then tied the score in the 27th minute, but
Rose Moore (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville Area) put the Golden Bears back in front with a goal assisted by
Rachel Dusman (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area) with just over one minute remaining in the first half. Leading 2-1 at the break, the Maroon and Gold maintained its lead for the first 20 minutes of second half. However, ESU found the equalizer it was searching for in the 56th minute as a Warrior player pounced on a rebound in front of goal and tapped it in to knot the game at 2-all.
With the score tied at 2-2, Kutztown had a chance to put itself back ahead with a flurry of shots in the 63rd minute, but couldn't find the go-ahead goal. With time running down, ESU countered after a KU penalty corner, streaking down the field for the game-winner with just 1:27 remaining.
Katie Dotterweich (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) made one saves and took the loss for KU, dropping her record to 9-4 on the season. ESU's Maddie Richie stopped five shots and earned the victory, improving her record to 10-2.
KU outshot ESU 11-8 and held a 5-3 advantage in penalty corners. Both sides recorded a defensive save in the game as
Hadley Wiktor (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) stood tall on the backline to prevent a goal in 55th minute. During Kutztown's offensive push in the 63rd minute, ESU needed a defensive save of its own to keep a shot from Fuhrman out of the net.
Moore scored for the second straight game, showing a flair for the dramatic with her goal just before halftime after scoring with 10 seconds to go against Shippensburg.
In the midst of a three-game slide, Kutztown will look to get back on track on Saturday, Oct. 20, taking on Slippery Rock at 12 p.m., a game which will feature KU Field Hockey's 50 Seasons Celebration.
