KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University men's basketball team would like to get some revenge Saturday afternoon when it travels to Shippensburg University for a 3 p.m. Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference game.
In a rematch of the PSAC championship game last season which was won by the Raiders, the Golden Bears (14-3 overall, 10-3 PSAC) will look to accomplish what they did last season, to win at Heiges Field House. On Feb. 9, 2017, KU defeated then No. 9 Shippensburg 81-75 on the road. The Raiders (14-3, 10-2) however were the only team to take down Kutztown twice last season, including in the PSAC title game 73-63 on Mar. 5. The regular season series the last two seasons is split, with both teams winning two games apiece, but Shippensburg has been a thorn in the side of KU during postseason play, getting on the winning end in each of the last two years.
For Kutztown to have success at Shippensburg, it will have to continue to have a balanced offensive attack. In its last road contest at East Stroudsburg last Saturday, Jan. 20, four Golden Bears starters scored in double-figures, but outside of their production (81 points), the team combined for just 14 points. But in the win over Lock Haven University in its last game, Wednesday, Jan. 24, KU had eight players record at least six points, and nine players made their way into the score sheet total.
Led by
Anthony Lee (Willow Grove, Pa./Abington)'s game-high 26 points against the Bald Eagles, Kutztown gave head coach
Bernie Driscoll his 300th career win at the helm, just the eighth head coach in PSAC history to reach the milestone.
Ethan Ridgeway (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) also hit a plateau, recording his 600th career assist, seventh in PSAC history all-time. Ridgeway finished with 13 points and seven assists,
Max Wagner (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) had a career-high 16 points and seven rebounds, and
Moe Williams (Townsend, Del./Life Center Academy) finished with 10 points, eight rebounds, one block and one steal.
The fifth starter,
Josh Townsend (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter), along with
Rafiq Marshall (Philadelphia, Pa./Simon Gratz (Cheyney)),
Ricky Hicks (Coatesville, Pa./Polytech) and
Facundo Arens (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Bahia Blanca) all tallied six points in the victory over Lock Haven. Senior
Demetrius Bennett (Conshohocken, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh (Neumann)) finished with two points.
Shippensburg, which is the last team to beat Kutztown at Keystone Arena (Dec. 30, 2016), is riding a six-game winning streak. It is coming off a 75-65 victory over Bloomsburg Wednesday. Dustin Sleva led all scorers with 21 points, and is fourth in the PSAC in scoring, just behind Lee, at 22.2 points per game. Sleva also ranks second in the PSAC with 10.8 rebounds per game, and leads the Raiders in blocks (19) and steals (17). He will be a vocal point to the Kutztown defense, just as KU did with then-PSAC leading scorer Amir Hinton (23.2 ppg) of Lock Haven, holding him to 19 points.
