KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University wrestling team won its final three bouts capped by a sudden victory in overtime from No. 5 Ryan Appleby (Belvidere, N.J./Belvidere), to secure its first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference win of the season, 19-17, over the Gannon University Golden Knights.

Trailing 17-16, Appleby faced off with GU's No. 7 Nick Budd in the heavyweight bout with the Golden Bears needing a victory to win the match. Appleby and Budd traded blows through the first three periods, but neither could break through, scoring one point each on escapes in the seven minutes of regulation time. In overtime, Appleby caught Budd out of position and capitalized, registering a takedown at the :28 second mark to notch the sudden victory for both him and his team.

A takedown and near-fall in the first period for Jeff Reimel (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) at 184 lbs. began the shift in momentum towards Kutztown, which was trailing 17-9 in the match. Reimel dominated his nationally-ranked opponent, No. 10 Nick Costa, winning by major decision, 11-3. The junior improved his season record to 9-7 and has now won three straight matches, two by fall coupled with today's major decision.

In the first of the afternoon's three matchups which pitted regionally-ranked competitors against one another, Austin Petril (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby (Ursinus)) outlasted Gannon's Jacob Dunlap, 2-0, at 125 lbs. to stake KU to a 3-0 advantage. Petril recorded a takedown at the 1:40 mark in the first period and kept Dunlap at bay, scrambling himself out of a few tough spots in the final two periods to improve his record to 5-4 on the season.

Dominic Mainiero (Nutley, N.J./Queen of Peace) was the aggressor from the outset in his tilt with the Golden Knights' Ethan Budd at 197 lbs., racking up two takedowns and riding out Budd for much of the third period to seal his 9-3 win.

After Gannon had taken three consecutive bouts at 133, 141 and 149 lbs., Bill Manley (Monroe Township, Pa./Tunkhannock Area) put the Golden Bears back in the win column at 157 lbs., scoring six third-period points to defeat GU's Connor Day, 12-6.

Connor Rogovich (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) followed up Manley's performance with a victory at 165 lbs. in a tight 8-6 decision over Gannon's Jared Sample. Manley and Rogovich's wins in the middle part of the match cut the KU to deficit to eight, trailing 17-9, setting the stage for Reimel, Mainiero and Appleby's heroics.

Kutztown won six bouts on the afternoon, winning all three of its regionally-ranked matchups, to record its second team victory of the season.

KU now turns its attention to next weekend's Kutztown University Duals, hosting American International, UNC Pembroke and Minot State on Jan. 26-27. Friday evening's match with AIU will begin at 6 p.m. and Saturday's matches with UNC Pembroke and MSU are slated for 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
