KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University men's basketball team could also be known as the "cardiac kids" of late, after two consecutive games won in the final second. This Saturday, Jan. 13, it will look to have a more comfortable game when it travels to Pucillo Gymnasium on the campus of Millersville University at 3 p.m. in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.
The Golden Bears (11-2 overall, 7-2 PSAC) are on a three-game winning streak, the last two have come thanks to
Ethan Ridgeway (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) and
Rafiq Marshall (Philadelphia, Pa./Simon Gratz (Cheyney)) game-winning shots with less than 0:01 remaining. Ridgeway won it in a 91-89 victory at Edinboro University last Saturday, Jan. 6, and Marshall was the hero of a 92-90 win against Mansfield University four nights later on Wednesday, Jan. 10.
Marshall tallied a season-high 22 points in 38 minutes of action versus the Mountaineers. Ridgeway recorded his second straight double-double with 15 points and 13 assists, as all five starters scored in double-figures for just the second time this season.
Anthony Lee (Willow Grove, Pa./Abington) (15 points),
Dan Cuevas (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) (18) and
Moe Williams (Townsend, Del./Life Center Academy) (14) rounded out the lineup.
KU has won its last 14 games in January dating back to Jan. 20, 2016, and will look to continue that trend against the Marauders (5-11, 3-7), who have lost three of their last four games and six of their last eight.
Kutztown is second in the PSAC in scoring offense (87.8 ppg), and has scored at least 90 points in each of the last three games. Millersville gave up 95 points in a 95-72 loss to Bloomsburg in its last game on Wednesday, Jan. 10, and have allowed 90-plus points in three of the last six games.
The Maroon and Gold won both games against the Marauders last season and have won the last six games in the series, dating back to the 2013-14 season. The last three KU victories have been by an average of 14.7 points. The series started in 1903-04 and has had 209 meetings thus far.
Millersville allowed the Huskies to shoot 59.3 percent from the field, which could be a welcoming sign for Kutztown, who's 50.8 field goal percentage on the season is on pace for the best percentage in the last 20 years. The mark leads the PSAC.
This could be a high-scoring game with two dynamic shooters between the two teams.
Lee is third in the PSAC in scoring (22.9 ppg) and second in Division II in 3-point percentage (55.3%), having knocked down 42 3-pointers on the season. At the other end, Millersville's Marcus Adkison (18.8 ppg) is third in the PSAC in 3-pointers made (45), and has scored in double-figures in 15 consecutive games.
Kutztown will look to keep pace in the top-two of the PSAC East Division, one game behind West Chester University (13-1, 9-1), and with East Stroudsburg University and Shippensburg University both with identical two league losses to Kutztown's two.
