KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Senior forward
Madison Stewart (New Castle, Del./William Penn) scored her team-leading third goal of the season for the Kutztown University field hockey team, and two other Golden Bears added goals in a 3-0 victory over No. 10 Adelphi in a non-conference game under the sun at Andre Reed Stadium Monday afternoon.
Stewart's tally in the second half was the cherry on top of the win, which gives Kutztown an unblemished 2-0 record to open up the regular season.
Sophomores
Kyra Wozniak (Plains, Pa./James M. Coughlin) and
Mackenzie Fuhrman (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) scored within three minutes of each other midway through the first half to give the Maroon and Gold a lead. Wozniak has scored in both games to start the season. Her two goals are good for second on the team, tied with freshman
Trinity Ponton (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area) and senior
Micaela Beaty (Drexel Hill, Pa./Archbishop Prendergast), who both had two goals in Saturday's win against Saint Thomas Aquinas.
Fuhrman meanwhile had her hand in all three goals, finishing with two assists and the one goal. She may have had more if it wasn't for a couple of saves by Panthers goalie Amanda Gargiulo. Fuhrman led the team with three shots.
Fuhrman collected a rebound off her shot and instead of trying once more on net, she found Wozniak open in front of the cage who slotted home the opener 13:20 into the first half.
Just 3:13 later, Fuhrman decided to get into the scoring column. After her first shot was saved to the outside,
Leigh Roselli (Romansville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) was there to gather it and send in a cross. Fuhrman was waiting on the other end of the pass and fired it past Gargiulo.
The Golden Bears defense did not allow a shot on goal in the first half, and held the Panthers to just five all game. The KU offense finished with 11 shots, nine of them on net.
In the middle of the second half, Fuhrman whipped a shot into the box. Stewart, who always seems to be in the right place at the right time, got a deflection onto the ball and it landed in the Adelphi net for KU's third goal of the day.
The Panthers offense began to put pressure on with about 12 minutes remaining. They were rewarded with four corners in a three-minute span, but just couldn't get any real good looks on goal.
On one corner, senior goalie
Chardonnay Hope (New Castle, Del./William Penn) made a diving save at the line to knock away a potential goal.
Morgan Aldinger (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen),
Hadley Wiktor (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) and
McKenna Conselyea (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) were solid along the backline in front of Hope. Hope recorded her second straight shutout and made four saves.
22 players were able to see the field in this one.
Kutztown remains at home for the third straight game to open the season. The Golden Bears will take on Slippery Rock Saturday, Sept. 9 at Andre Reed Stadium as they open up Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play. Start time is set for 11 a.m.
