INDIANA, Pa. –
Trinity Ponton (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area) gave the Kutztown University field hockey team an early 1-0 lead in the first half, but Indiana University (PA) answered with two second-half goals to protect its home turf and down the Golden Bears 2-1 Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Miller Stadium.
Ponton's fourth goal of the year came in the 12th minute. She worked a breakaway and used her terrific speed to work past the keeper for a goal.
KU maintained its lead through halftime, outshooting the Crimson Hawks 7-3 in the opening frame. The second half fell in IUP's favor though. It outshot Kutztown 8-4, held an 8-2 advantage on penalty corners, and ultimately pocketed a pair of goals in the 49th and 66th minutes.
Chardonnay Hope (New Castle, Del./William Penn) made six saves in net, while
Hadley Wiktor (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) made her mark with a defensive save in the 65th minute in a then-tied game.
Kutztown returns home on Wednesday night, Sept. 20, for its final non-conference game of the first half of the season. KU hosts West Chester University at Andre Reed Stadium for a 7 p.m. start.
