Kutztown Upsets West Chester Wednesday Night for Biggest Win of Season

Video Highlights

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The ninth-ranked Kutztown University field hockey team earned its biggest win of the season Wednesday night, handing third-ranked West Chester University its first loss of the season in upset fashion with a 2-1 victory at University Field at Andre Reed Stadium.

Kutztown (5-2) controlled the first half of action, outshooting the Golden Rams 10-1 to jump to a 2-0 halftime lead. For the game, Kutztown finished with a 15-6 advantage in shots and 11-5 in penalty corners.

Wednesday night marked KU's first win over West Chester since 2015, when the Golden Rams were ranked second in Division II. West Chester was the final undefeated team in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).

Kutztown opened extremely well in the first half, holding a 10-1 advantage in shots and 9-1 in corners. KU scored both of its goals within a 4:00 span, both coming off rebounds.

Off a corner in the 22nd minute, Mackenzie Fuhrman (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) slid a pass in front of the West Chester goalie and found Kyra Wozniak (Plains, Pa./James M. Coughlin) to clean it up and score her fifth goal of the year for a 1-0 lead.

Less than four minutes later in the 26th minute, Fuhrman once again found herself in front of goal with the ball. She sent a cross into the center of the circle, and yet again, a Golden Bear was there to put it in. Freshman Trinity Ponton (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area) cleaned up the saved shot and scored at the right post for a 2-0 Kutztown lead that it carried into halftime.

It was Fuhrman's second assist of the night.

West Chester got on the board in the opening 10 minutes of the second half. In a scramble in front of the cage, Kaitlin Hatch found Katie Thompson in front to cut West Chester's deficit in half with nearly 30:00 to play.

Kutztown's defense stepped up down the stretch, made crucial stops and maintained possession through the final minutes. Goalkeeper Chardonnay Hope (New Castle, Del./William Penn) made a notable diving save across the penalty circle late in the game, while outside defender Hadley Wiktor (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) ran out most of the final 2:00 by keeping possession in the corner of the field.

Hope moves to 5-2 in the cage this season and made four saves Wednesday night.

The Golden Bears look to keep the momentum rolling this Saturday, Sept. 23, in their conference-opening game against Seton Hill University beginning at 1 p.m. on Family Day.
